Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A. The Hacienda Del Sur Apartments, #1A.
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?
A. At 263 Glendora Ave, in Miami.
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode 9, of Season 8, "Make Your Own Kind of Music"
After Cassie's murder, Debra suggests to Quinn that they should question Cassie's boyfriend, Oliver Saxon.
In the first scene, Deb & Quinn go to Saxon's apartment, where he claims he is innocent.
But Debra trips him up with some questions (based on info she got from Jamie) and catches Saxon in a lie or two.
Outside, Debra tells Quinn he was lying, and remarks that she had forgotten how much she likes police work.
Quinn then kisses her - a somewhat awkward moment, since he's currently dating Jamie. But Deb doesn't seem terribly unpleased...
Meanwhile, Dexter learns that the Brain Surgeon is probably Vogel's long-lost son, and he has reason to believe it might be Oliver Saxon.
In the
second scene, Dex goes to Saxon's house, after dark, knowing that he has
to act fast, since Deb & Quinn's questions might have spooked Saxon.
And sure enough, when Dex looks in Saxon's window, he has already moved out.
Dexter searches his trash can, and finds a soda can that contains Saxon's DNA.
(A later test reveals that he is indeed Vogel's son.)
Q. What is it actually in real life?
Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. They kept the actual street address on the fake "Hacienda Del Sur" sign they posted outside - they only changed the city.
They shot these scenes at an apartment house at 263 Glendora Avenue, in Long Beach, CA.
I shot the photos below in 2013.
Below is the palm tree where they posted the fake sign, and the path Quinn & Deb walked:
[ Warning: These are private apartments. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything that might disturb the residents. ]
Here is an aerial
photo of the location. Here is a Google StreetView. And here is a map
link.
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In the early seasons, I
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using
clues from the various scenes. By the now, though, I've developed
a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and let me know in advance when something is about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the new first episode airs, I
already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Suzi, Elaine, Mia,
Julie, Kerry, Joel, Eric, Jeff, & others. My thanks to all of them.
Fortunately, the producers put a sign out front with a fake name, but
the actual street address. Since I knew there was a Glendora
Avenue in Long Beach, I compared the real 263 Glendora with the apartment house in the scene, and it was a match.
