Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode 1, of Season 8, "A Beautiful Day".
In a short scene, Dexter, worried
about Debra with Briggs, comes to Quinn's place (interrupting Quinn
& Jamie trying to have sex).
Quinn answers the door angry, sees that it's Dexter (and Harrison), and calms down.
He tells Dexter that the last he heard from Debra, she was staying at the Pink Motel.
Dexter leaves and goes there.
Q. What is it actually in real life?
Q. Where can I find it in real life?
A. This apartment house is located at
40 Bay Shore Ave, in Long Beach, CA.
That's on the east side of the
street, just past the split where Bay Shore branches off from 54th
Street, and just north of the main beach.
So, even though it's on the same street as Angel's home and Vogel's house - it doesn't have a view of Alamitos Bay.
They chose an Art Deco-style
building, like those in Florida's South Beach, then (as they did with
Angel's and Vogel's homes), they repainted this building before
shooting.
It was originally a somewhat dull
Army green, but they changed that to an aqua blue & white mix that
looks more like South Beach. (For the night shot, they also lit its
lower half with pink lights.)
Plus, they added a very large number 40 above the door.
(This Belmont Shore area was their favorite place to film this season.)
This apartment house is just a short walk to Angels Beach Café. And not far from Deb's beach house on the peninsula.

[ Warning: This these are private apartments. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their doors, or do anything that might disturb the residents. ]
Here is an aerial
photo of the location. Here is a Google StreetView. And here is a map

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In the early seasons, I
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using
clues from the various scenes. By the now, though, I've developed
a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and let me know in advance when something is about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the new first episode airs, I
already know most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
need to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Rick, Ellen, Suzi, Elaine, Mia,
Julie, Kerry, Joel, Eric, Jeff, & others. My thanks to all of them.
This tip came from Rick. (Thanks, Rick!).
