Dexter Filming Locations: Ricochet Rabbit

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: The Ricochet Rabbit
(Docked at the marina)

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A yacht, named Ricochet Rabbit.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Two locations: first, docked at a marina in Coral Gables, Florida. Second, docked near a bridge, at 114 Bleaker Canal Road.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 10, of Season 6, "Ricochet Rabbit".

The yacht appears several times in the episode, at two separate locations.

Holly Benson, the woman that Travis abducted and later released, is hiding out, afraid that Travis & Gellar might threaten her again.

And she's right to be afraid.  Crazy Travis has changed his mind again, and has decided to finish the job of killing "The Whore of Babylon".

In the first scenes, we see Holly Benson arrive at her boyfriend's yacht, the Ricochet Rabbit, which is docked at a marina.

Soon, Travis and his two new disciples (Steve & Beth Dorsey) arrive in a car.

Holly, inside the yacht, turns to find Travis looming in the doorway.  "Hello, whore," he says.

She tries to run away, but is cornered by Travis's disciples.

Later, we see Travis sail the boat out of that marina.

( In the later scene, we see the Ricochet Rabbit docked under a bridge, at night. It's where Travis murders Holly - with the help of Steve, and where we see Dexter find the boat and board it.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

A. A yacht.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. The Ricochet Rabbit is really the Victoria, a yacht which is usually docked near Alamitos Landing, in Long Beach, CA.

But for these scenes, they sailed the Victoria to two different locations.

The first set of scenes are of Holly arriving at the yacht, of her being caught by Travis, and of Travis later pulling the boat out of the marina.

These first scenes were shot at the Rainbow Harbor marina, west of Shoreline Village, in Long Beach, CA.

To be more specific, the boat was docked next to Pierpoint Landing, a particular section of the marina (dedicated to sports fishing).  It's located south of the Aquarium of the Pacific, near a semicircle of small buildings, with the address of 200 Aquarium Way.  (See a map.
)

That's right next door to Shoreline Park, which is where they filmed the 3rd Season scene of police finding the Skinner's second victim.
It's also just a short walk from the party boat dock where Masuka brought Dexter for his bachelor's party (also in Season 3).  And between those two locations, you'll find the Aquarium where Dexter met with Lila (in Season 2).

Walk a little farther east, and you'll be at Shoreline Village
, where they've filmed numerous times: most recently, the scenes where Gellar & Travis went to a nightclub, where Travis failed in an abduction attempt, and where they finally abducted Holly Benson.

Also in the same neighborhood is the street where they filmed the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse scene, and the Museum of Art location.

I shot the photos below (during filming) in September 2011.

In the top photo, the camera is looking southwest across Rainbow Harbor.
(The low buildings of Pierpoint Landing are visible in the background, behind the boat.).

And a closer look at the yacht, as they prepped it for the scene.

And a close-up of the fake name on the boat:

Looking behind us, here are the Pierpoint Landing buildings.
(The camera is looking southeast.  That is Shoreline Park to the left.).

Here is an aerial photo of the Pierpoint Landing dock.  And here is a map link.

Here's a Google StreetView of the Victoria in its usual dock, near Alamitos Landing, in Long Beach.

Here is an aerial map showing both locations where they docked the yacht.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  I went to the marina the morning of September 9, 2011, after hearing that they were filming there.  Rick had suggested I look for a yacht named the Victoria, which they had reportedly rented for the scene.  But when I got there, expecting a busy shoot, I was surprised to find very little activity underway, and just a few hints of filming in the area.

I didn't see a boat named Victoria at all.  Instead, I noticed a yacht docked nearby named Ricochet Rabbit.  At the time, the name of the episode hadn't been announced, so that name meant nothing me.  I assumed it was just one of the local boats at the marina.

However, as I looked a little closer, I happened to notice that, just under the name Ricochet Rabbit, in small print, it read "Coral Gables Florida" (as you can see below, in a blow-up of one of my photos above).

Florida?  I realized then that the boat was almost certainly part of the Dexter scene.  And taking a second look, I recognized the yacht as the Victoria in disguise.  (They had actually hung a matching banner over the boat's original name, rather than re-paint it.)

It was before noon, and they must have been just starting to prep the ship for the scene, because there were no cameras in sight and only a handful of people on the boat itself.  So, I shot the photos you see above.

I was amused, later in the year, when the title of the 10th episode was announced to be "Ricochet Rabbit."

By the way, if you were born after the 1960's and are wondering about the name Ricochet Rabbit, it was the name of an animated cartoon character from Hanna-Barbera, the same studio that gave us "The Flintstones", "Yogi Bear" and "Huckleberry Hound".  "Ricochet" was a minor effort, though, a satire of the TV Westerns that were popular at the time.  If you've got a masochistic streak, you can watch one of the episodes here.
      (But don't say I didn't warn you...)
