Where can I find it in real life?
What is it supposed to be on the show?
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
When did we see it on the show?
A. In one extremely brief scene in Episode 6, of Season 6, "Just Let Go".
Travis & Professor Gellar had previously abducted
a woman, Holly Benson, to use in their next bloody Doomsday tableau - this one about
the "Whore of Babylon", and they were holding her captive at their church.
had been feeling guilty about it, since the woman's arm was broken and
she was in constant pain. Gellar wouldn't even allow him to give
Plus, Dexter had recently let Travis go, warning him that Gellar was pure darkness. So Travis was beginning to have second thoughts about his mentor.
Gellar ordered him to brand the woman, Travis made a feeble attempt to
do so, but couldn't bring himself to do it, especially when she begged
him for mercy.
very brief, very dark, night scene, we see Travis's car pull into a
beach parking lot. He gets out, pushes the frightened (and still
blindfolded) woman out of the car, and tells her she is free.
What is it actually in real life?
A. This very brief scene was filmed right across the street from the sheltered "baptism beach" where they filmed the scene of Dexter drowning Nick (in this same episode).
It was filmed in a beach parking
lot south of the 5300 block of E. Ocean Blvd, between 54th Place and Claremont Place, in Long Beach, CA.
It isn't easy to see in this very
dark scene, but the camera is looking northwest, back up the coast, with
the Long Beach skyline visible in the distance behind them.
This is the same beach where they filmed that scene of Bimimi, back in Season 5 (where Dexter was stalking wife-killer Ethan Turner). And it's just northwest of Deb's new beach house.
I shot the photo below in November 2011.
(The camera is looking west, with the Palos Verdes hill and the downtown Long Beach skyline in the background.).
Here is a blow-up from that wide-angle shot, showing the
part of the background that matches with the screencap:
Here is an aerial
photo of the location. Here is a Google StreetView.
And here is a map
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. Since Dexter loves to cluster-shoot, and since they had filmed two other beach scenes for the same episode, I assumed they probably shot this at either the baptism beach or near Deb's beach house
- or very nearby.
But when I brightened up the screencaps of the
short scene (see below), I was surprised to see what looked like the Long Beach
skyline in the distance. That shouldn't be visible from either of
But I also saw something else in
that screencap: an unusual, low fence, made of what looked like bamboo
So, I took a look (via StreetView) across the street from
the baptism beach, at the main beach lot south of Ocean Blvd. At first, I
saw no sign of the fence. But once I moved southeast of 54th
Street, that low fence magically appeared on StreetView, with the Long Beach skyline behind it. If you move back northwest of 54th, the fence disappears again from StreetView.
So I went there in person, to
shoot the above photos, and sure enough, the fence was there. So, I have to
assume the fence-less StreetView photos were shot prior to the
installation of the fence, and the scene was obviously filmed after it was installed.
