Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
A. In South Beach, Miami.
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. We first see the campus in Episode 5, of Season 6, "The Angel of Death".
Professor
Gellar and Travis Marshall are sitting in a noisy, colorful Miami
nightclub, after dark. They are surrounded by a wild party scene, with
lots of sexy girls and demonstrative couples.
The killers
are there to abduct a woman as their "Whore of Babylon", the next
victim in their sequence of bloody "End of the World" tableaus that they
have been creating across Miami.
Gellar
remarks negatively on the sexy clothes worn by the girls, telling Travis it's
natural for him to want to look at them. Travis replies that he
finds it sad, because "all of these people are doomed, and don't even
realize it".
Travis
spots a newspaper rack, and realizes that there is a picture of
Professor Gellar on the front page, under the headline "The Doomsday
Killer".
So he quickly buys the last copy, and shows it to Gellar, who agrees that he had better stay out of sight.
He tells Travis that he may have to find their "Whore of Babylon" without him.
Travis is doubtful that he can do it on his own. Gellar assures him that he can.
( This leads to the later scene in which Travis unsuccessfully attempts to abduct a woman from the marina. And later, to yet another scene, where Gellar & Travis successfully kidnap another woman.)
Q.
What is it actually in real life?

Where can I find it in real life? |

A. This nightclub scene was shot at a cafe/bar known as "33 Degrees - Harborside Pub."
The address is 423-A Shoreline Village Drive, at Shoreline Village Drive, in Long Beach, CA.
That's near the center of Shoreline Village, a nautical-themed shopping/dining village built around a marina.
33 Degrees sits facing the marina, with only the boardwalk separating it from the boats & water.
This
nightclub scene wasn't actually filmed inside the pub. Instead,
they used its front
porch/patio, then jazzed it up with a lot of neon and a parade
of sexy of party-goers. (For instance, they outlined the patio fence with glowing neon, put neon signs in
the windows, etc.)
The pub has its own website, here.
In a first-rate example of how Dexter loves to cluster-shoot, they later used the inside of the same pub to film the Tallahassee bar scene (where Quinn hits on Professor Porter).
Then they used the Shoreline marina, right in front of the 33 Degrees, to film Travis's failed attempt to abduct a woman.
And finally, they used the parking lot right behind the pub to film the scene of Gellar & Travis running over a couple, and successfully abducting the woman.
Not long ago, this space was home to an Australian pub named "Springbok".
For the third-season, they filmed the scene of Ramon Prado's bar inside Springbok.
And (in the same season) just outside the pub, on the boardwalk, they created a fake outdoor cafe, and filmed the scene where Dexter confronted a predator who had been stalking Astor.
I shot the photos below in November 2011.
This is the porch/patio of 33 Degrees" that they turned into the nightclub - where Gellar & Travis were sitting.
(Shot from the boardwalk, with the camera looking southeast.)
And this a more distant shot, showing the full building - with the camera looking southwest.
Here is an aerial
photo of the pub. And here is a map
link.
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In previous seasons, I've
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the 6th season, though,
I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I
already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, Jason, Jen, and others. My thanks to all of them.
Rick let me know that they were filming at Shoreline Village. Then, it turns out that Jeff
has a son who landed a role as an extra in this nightclub scene (as
well as in the later
attempted abduction scene). Jeff let me know that they also filmed
the bar scene at the same cafe, and the abduction scenes nearby. (Thanks, Jeff!)
