Dexter Filming Locations: In the Moving Van with Harrison

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: In the Moving Van with Harrison.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A parking lot.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Outside Dexter's apartment complex, in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 2, of Season 5, "Hello, Bandit".

Dexter is up late at night, unable to sleep, and sees that his baby, Harrison, is also awake.

Unable to resist the siren call of the blood he noticed in a rented moving van, Dexter carries the baby outside, to that van, and opens the back of the truck.

Inside the van, with Harrison, he shines an ultraviolet flashlight on a large blood stain on the van door.  As it lights up, a neon blue, baby Harrison coos, and Dexter begins talking to him.

He tells the story the blood stains tell: the victim was hit two or three times while on his knees. And a female victim was also on her knees, leaving small handprints in the blood.

As Dexter opens the van door, we get another appearance of Harry (Dexter's dead father), who warns Dexter not to neglect the children while pursuing his dark hobby.

Back inside the house, Dexter looks up the last person to rent the van and finds it was Boyd Fowler, who works for the Department of Sanitation in dead-animal pickup.

Wondering if the blood might be that of an animal, Dexter tests it - and finds it is human.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. The parking lot next to an apartment house.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. In Long Beach, CA.

The parking lot, where Dexter has the van parked, is in between two buildings: The Linden, an apartment house at 3654 Linden Ave (on the north side of the parking lot), and the Long Beach Petroleum Club, at 3636 Linden Ave, (on the south side of the lot).

I believe the lot actually belongs to the Club.

Whatever, the moving van is parked in the lot, facing the apartment house. At one moment, as Dexter walks to the van, you get a brief glimpse of the condo across the street (see the second photo from the top), at 3695 Linden.

The lot is on the east side of Linden, between 36th & 37th Streets, a few blocks north of the San Diego (405) Freeway.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the 5th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, and my own personal reconnaissance around town, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Joel, Geoff, Ellen, Julie, Susan, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.

I knew in advance (from a tip from Rick) that they were shooting in this area, and went there during filming.

So when I saw the scene in the episode, Linden Avenue was the first place I looked to see if I could match it. The first thing I noticed were those blue posts that Dexter walks past on his way to the van.  They match the blue posts around the parking lot north of the Petroleum Club. Then I checked a glimpse of the building seen behind the van, and it matched the south side of The Linden apartment house, just north of the lot. Finally, a glimpse across the street featured a large, round hedge or tree, next to what looked like an apartment house.  Checking Google StreetView, that turned out to be the condo across the street, at 3695 Linden.
