The
location: Angel Food Donuts. |
Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A.
A donut shop
(with a giant donut out front). Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show? A.
Somewhere
in Miami. Q. When did we see it on the show? A. Only once, in Episode 6 (of season 3), "Si Se Puede". It's where Debra watches Miguel Prado's brother (Ramon Prado) illegally abduct a suspect, causing her to believe that he might be the 'Skinner' killer. She briefly parks in the parking lot of the donut shop, while she spies on Ramon. He strikes the suspect, then throws him in the trunk of his car. The
scene then switches to the harbor docks in San Pedro. where Debra he
&
Quinn have followed him, and where they watch him interrogate the man. Q. What is it actually in real life? A.
A donut shop (with a giant donut out front). Q. Where can I find it in real life? A. There are still a few of these giant donut signs around the greater Los Angeles area, left over from the 1950's when such kitschy displays were commonplace. You'll find this giant donut in northwest Long Beach, just a few blocks east of several other Dexter locations: Prado's house and LaGuerta's house, the murder scene with the grieving fiancé, and the white house being sold by Rita and Syl. And it's just north of the spot where they filmed an earlier scene of Debra spying on Ramon at a cafe. It's actually Mrs. Chapman's Angel Food Donuts, at 3860 Long Beach Blvd, in Long Beach. Debra parks in the lot on the south side of the shop, and watches Ramon, who is parked on the far east side of that same lot. That's on the east side of Long Beach Blvd, less than a mile north of the San Diego (405) freeway, at the southeast corner of Long Beach Blvd and Roosevelt Road. The shop is still open for business, if you want to stop by for a donut & coffee. But
don't confuse this donut shop with the other donut shop from
the
same third season: the one where Prado
confronts
Dexter. I shot the photo below in 2009
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was? A.
I
have driven past this giant donut many times, and have even stopped
here
once or twice for a donut. So I simply recognized it when I saw
it
on Dexter.
