Dexter: New Blood Filming Locations
the world's most comprehensive guide to locations where Dexter was shot

Gig's Market & butcher shop

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A market or grocery store, with a butcher shop in the back.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In Iron Lake, New York.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 1, of Season 9, "Cold Snap".

We first see the market (at 09:34), when Dexter is first walking down Main Street, greeting  townspeople. He is greeted by Ramon, who comes out of the market carrying a small sack.

He asks how Jim & Angela are doing, and then spots Edward Olsen's helicopter flying overhead and remarks that "Rich asshole season has begun."

Walking past the market, Dexter then turns right and walks west up Clement Street (at 10:02) past the left  side of the market, and then goes back behind the market (at 10:10), where he  talks to Gig, the butcher, who is busy chopping bloody meat with a dull cleaver. Dexter gives him the cleaver he has sharpened for him.

The name of the Market is never given, but there is a small sign to the left of the Market's front door that reads "Gig's Butcher Shop", which is apparently inside the market.

Finally, (at 10:41) we see Dexter emerge from the front door of the market, carrying a pink box of pastries, which he takes to his job. ( We later see that the writing on that pink donut box reads "Sweetie's baked goods", so there is apparently also a bakery department inside the market.)

The market shows up again in Episode 3, when Audrey goes there to buy some sausage from Gig's butcher shop, and Gig meets Harrison.

Audrey Is outraged when she learns that the carcass of the white deer is in Gig's cooler, and is to be casually thrown away.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. This is an actual market.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. In real life, this is called McCusker's Market, and you'll find it at at 3 State Street, in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts.

That's at the northwest corner of State Street & Clement Street. The market takes its name from its former owner, Mike McCusker.

The Market is one of the three Dexter filming locations located on the west side of the Deerfield Rver / iron bridge, on State Street (The other two being the Iron Lake Police station. and the Iron Lake Tavern.  (The remaining Shelburne Falls locations are located on Bridge Street, on the east side of the bridge.)

If you're driving west across the bridge, when you exit the bridge you  will find yourself on State Street, which runs north-south. The market is just 80 feet to your left (south), on the west side of the street.

Here is a Google StreetView of the market:

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. Among the various local newspaper articles I read while the series was being filmed was one photo essay that included a shot of the market with its name, McCusker's Market, clearly visible.  So I made a note of it, and then compared a StreetView of the market with what I saw in the episode when Dexter stopped to talk to Ramon, and it perfectly matched.

It was also mentioned In the press that they filmed behind the market, and that they had brought in a lot of fake snow for that shoot.

So when Dexter walked behind the market, I knew he was heading to another scene, and that it would include snow. Which it did. (But I didn't expect the pooled blood or the butchered pigs.) I double-checked the location by looking at aerial photos, And Was able to match the same bridge-like walkway behind the store, which can be seen in the background of those butcher scenes.
