Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A local police headquarters.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In Iron Lake, New York.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. We first see the station in Episode 1, of Season 9, "Cold Snap".

At 15:32, Dexter goes there shortly after his first encounter with Matt (at Fred's), to see Angela, the town's police chief, and Dexter's (Jim's) girlfriend.

While there, we get a brief glimpse at the characters working for the department, including the handicapped dispatcher, Esther, deputy Logan (who comes in, carrying, and armfull of pecan pies, which had been stolen from the Congregational church), and deputy Teddy, who is nursing a painful tooth.

They get into a discussion about Matt Caldwell. Esther thinks he's a troublemaker, but Logan defends him as "a nice guy.", but is then surprised when he checks his record to find "more than a few spots".

Angela emerges from a meeting, complaining that nothing is being done about a case involving string of missing girls.

Dex and Angela agree to meet later at the Iron Lake Tavern, to go line -dancing.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

A. This building is actually the Buckland Town Hall, the seat of local government for the town of Buckland, which Thisalong with Shelburne, makes up the village Shelburne Falls.

They didn't need to do much to change the Buckland Town Hall Into the Iron Lake Police Department. All they did was replace the original sign, which read "Town of Buckland", with one reading. "Iron Lake Police.", and hang up a few Christmas decorations outside (since the series takes place in December).

The interiors were shot on a soundstage set at New England Studios.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. The Iron Lake Police station building, is located directly across the street from the Iron Lake Tavern, at 17 State Street, in Shelburne Falls, Massachusetts.

Both buildings are on the west side of the river and the bridge, and State Street runs north/south past the west end of the iron bridge.

The Police station is located on the west side of State Street, while the Tavern, Is located on the east side of State Street (right next to the bridge).

( We glimpse the Police station again briefly at 17:37, when Angela drives up, parks, and sprints across the street to Dexter, who is waiting in front of the tavern for their date. )

Here is a Google StreetView of the building:

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. Even before filming had started, it was being reported that the production (then called "Marble") had expressed interest in using the Buckland Town Hall as a possible filming location. So I made a note of it and checked out photos of the Town Hall. So it was easy to recognize when it turned up on the show.

But the local newspapers made it even easier, by publishing photos shot during the filming, in which the Town Hall already had the "Iron Lake Police" sign up in front.
