Q. What is it supposed to be on the show? A. A scene of a police car speeding through the snowy countryside. Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show? A.  In Iron Lake, New York. Q. When did we see it on the show? A. In Episode 1 of Season 1.    At the very start of this new prequel series, they needed to establish that current-day Dexter had survived being shot by his son, at the end of Dexter: New Blood. So the opening scenes of Dexter: Original Sin did just that, showing a still living Dexter in the back of an ambulance.  Q. What is it actually in real life?   A. A country road, but not in New York.   Q. Where can I find it in real life? A. Although they needed scenes from Iron Lake, the Dexter: New Blood series was filmed in Massachusetts, in the winter, when it was actually snowing.

Since they filmed Dexter: Original Sin during the summer, it didn’t make any sense to go all the way back to Massachusetts for a view very brief shots.

So they took the easy way out .

First, for Dexter's memories while he was in the police car, they used previously-seen footage from New Blood of the scene of Harrison shooting Dexter, and then used what appears to be old footage from New Blood of the police car speeding through the countryside.

( If you take a really close look at that shot of the police car speeding down the road, you will notice that the word “police” is backwards, indicating that they flipped the image to make it look like the vehicle was heading in the opposite direction.)

What we can see of the background looks virtually identical to the Massachusetts roads where they had filmed New Blood scenes such as the one where Audrey’s car broke down,  and where Angela pulled Dexter over in the first episode, which were filmed in places like Nagog Hill Road, in Littleton, Massachusetts and Highway 117, in Lancaster, Massachusetts.

The hospital scenes, where the doctors work too resuscitate Dexter, are new and feature a fresh appearance by Michael C. Hall, but they were most likely shot on a studio set here in Los Angeles.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A.  Since I had previously tracked down the Massachusetts locations of New Blood, it wasn’t difficult to recognize the same areas when they showed up In Original Sin.
