The location: The "New" Newport House.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A new house the Cohens are looking at while shopping for a new home.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In Newport Beach.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In the final episode (16, of season 4), "The End Isn't Near, It's Here", the Cohen house has been destroyed in an earthquake. So the family is out looking for a new house.

They eventually end up back in Berkeley, but first they are seen looking at this (supposedly) new house in Newport Beach, with a real estate broker in tow.

They remark on the infinity pool, and then express their disappointment that there's nothing special about this house, and that it just doesn't seem like home.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A private home - but not in Newport Beach.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. The irony here is delightful.

This pool/patio scene was actually shot at the real pool/patio behind the actual Cohen house, at 6205 Ocean Breeze Drive, in Malibu, CA.

The Cohens' familiar infinity pool (the one we see each week) was never really located behind this Malibu house, but rather was based on a pool in the backyard of a neighboring home. (The poolhouse itself never really existed outside the studio).

So, until now, we never saw really the actual pool/patio area behind the Cohen home (that is, the Malibu house, whose front we glimpsed in every episode).

So here we finally see it, at long last, and Sandy remarks that it doesn't seem like home. ;)

If you look closely, when they are showing the close-up of the infinity pool, you can see part of Marissa's home (the red tile roof) in the background (on the upper left side).

The Cohen house is located in a gated community in the hills just northwest of Malibu's Point Dume, a good 80 miles away from those Crystal Cove homes shown at the start of every episode.

(It's about eleven miles west another well-known OC location, Caleb & Julie's mansion.)

[WarningThis is a private home. Do not trespass on their property, knock on their door,
or do anything else that might disturb the residents.

Here is a map link. And here is an aerial photo of the home (when it was still under construction)

And here is another aerial photo, this one from the back of the house, showing the pool.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. I found the Cohen house a long time ago, and had studied Live Local's aerial photos of the homes, backyards and pools in that small block, in order to determine the original location of the Cohen pool patio. So by the time I saw the pool and patio on TV in the final episode, I easily recognized it.

I put off creating a new page about it until the final season DVD's came out, and in the meantime, another keen-eyed fan, Steve Covington, also recognized it, and emailed me to let me know. Thanks, Steve!
