The ABC Family series, "The Fosters", is supposed to take place in San Diego.
But in reality, the show is filmed in the Los Angeles area,
mostly in the coastal towns of San Pedro and Long Beach. ![]()
For instance, the Fosters' residential home (seen above), where the extended
family lives, is located at 2330 E. 1st Street, in Long Beach, CA. That's on the south side of 1st, just one block north of Ocean Blvd, the main street that runs along the city's scenic coastline, in the city's Bluff Park neighborhood. (There is indeed a real Bluff Park, overlooking the ocean, and it houses the Long Beach Museum of Art.) The Bluff Park neighborhood is filled with beautiful old Craftsman-style houses such as the Fosters' house. In fact, they used the house right next door for the home of "Joan of Arcadia" in that 2003-2005 TV series. Here is a Google StreetView of the house. [Warning: This is a private home. Do not trespass on their property, knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents.] And what about Anchor Beach Charter School?
![]()
As you might have guessed, it's right on the beach. But it isn't really a school. This is actually the historic Cabrillo Beach Bath House, located at 3800 Stephen M. White Drive, in San Pedro, CA. Opened in 1931, the Cabrillo bath house was used in the 1932 L.A. Olympics. Renovated in 2002, and reopened as a community building, it contains a ballroom (upstairs), classrooms, and an arcade patio/lawn which is available for weddings. ![]() You'll find it next to the Cabrillo Pier. The beach and lawn you see above is behind the building. That's also where you'll find the mission-style arches you see on the show. The hill in the distance is the southeast corner of the Palos Verdes peninsula, an area known as Point Fermin. This can be a hard place to find. Even the Steven White Drive address is deceptive, since the building is actually located on a loop called Oliver Vickery Circle Way, that branches (to the southeast) off White Drive. (Let your GPS be your guide.) Also, be warned that they charge for parking here - which includes not just the bathhouse, but the nearby aquarium, Cabrillo beach and the Cabrillo Pier as well. But as of 2013, the parking fee was only $1 an hour, so don't let the guard booth in the road scare you off - it's just there to collect parking fees. Here is a Google StreetView of the building. ![]() ![]() Near the start of the first episode, Lena first picks up Callie at the Chula Vista Juvenile Detention Center, when she's released from juvie. That scene was actually shot outside the former Lincoln Heights Jail at 401 N. Avenue 19, just north of downtown Los Angeles. The scene was shot in the parking lot at the south end of the building. (That's just east of the Los Angeles River, and trust me, this is not a place you want to visit.) The jail closed in 1965, and has been used in other film productions, including the horror classic "Nightmare on Elm Street" and "L.A. Confidential". (Here is a Google StreetView of the jail and its parking lot.) ![]() ![]() In the first episode, Callie runs away (with Brandon tagging along) and takes a bus to find her brother Jude. They wind up at Callie's old family home, where she finds Jude, but where her abusive father pulls a gun on Brandon. That house is located about a mile northeast of Anchor Beach school, at 290 W. 18th Street, in San Pedro, CA. [Warning: This is a private home. Do not trespass on their property, knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents.] (Here is a Google StreetView of the house.) ![]() When Mariana meets her biological mother at night and gives her money... ![]() That scene was shot on the beach in Long Beach, off Ocean Blvd. That multi-tiered building you see behind them in this scene is perched on the bluff above the beach, at 1920 E. Ocean Blvd (at 15th Street), in Long Beach. Here is a Bing StreetSide view of the beach and that building. ![]() In Episode 2, they filmed a lot in that same general area of Long Beach, near Ocean Blvd, around Bixby Park, just west of the Fosters home: There's a scene of Brandon walking down the street, talking to two of his friends. One friend says that Brandon's girlfriend, Talya, is insecure because Callie is now living in Brandon's house. ![]() That scene was shot on Ocean Blvd, in Long Beach. They are walking west, on the north side of the 2200 block of Ocean Blvd. (The camera is looking southeast, towards a blue street sign that reads "18th Place".) The banner reading "Museum", also seen in the background, s the Long Beach Museum of Art, which is across the street, a block to the east, at 2300 E. Ocean Blvd. (The museum is housed in a 1912 Craftsman home that somewhat resembles the Fosters home.) Here is a Google StreetView panorama of the street there. And nearby, they filmed this scene of Brandon & Talya walking together in a park: ![]() That is Bixby Park, which is on the north side of Ocean Blvd, between Cherry Ave and Junipero Ave. in the 2000 block of Ocean. Here is a Google StreetView panorama of the park. (In the photo above, the camera is looking southwest, while they are walking east, along the south edge of the park. That's Ocean Blvd seen in the background.) And in the same episode, we get this shot of the police car, with Stef & Mike inside: ![]() You guessed it: the police car is heading west on Ocean Blvd, driving past Bixby park, just west of Junipero Ave. (This shot was filmed from just inside Bixby Park, with the camera looking southeast.) The car interior shots (the background seen through the windows of the patrol car), were also mostly shot on Ocean Blvd, as they cruise around that general area. Here are map links with all of those nearby locations marked: ![]()
