Seeing Stars: Where the Movies Were Shot (on Location)

Part 1

  • The wedding scene in the 1979 comedy "10," where Dudley Moore first sees Bo Derek, was filmed outside the All Saints Episcopal/Anglican Church, 504 N. Camden Drive, at the northeast corner of Santa Monica Boulevard & Camden Drive in Beverly Hills (just around the corner from Rodeo Drive.)
  • In the scene, Dudley has been following bride-to-be Bo in his car, and is watching her so intently that he runs right into a police car. This accident scene was filmed on Camden, on the west side of the church.

This was also the church where they held the funeral for screen legend Humphrey Bogart, back in 1957. Three thousand spectators attended, and stars there included Lauren Bacall, Gregory Peck, Marlene Dietrich, Danny Kaye, Dick Powell, David Niven, John Huston and Sam Goldwyn.

  • The impressive Fenye Mansion (470 W. Walnut Street) in Pasadena served as the White House in "ELEANOR & FRANKLIN: THE WHITE HOUSE YEARS," and was also featured in the 1979 movie "BEING THERE," with Peter Sellers. One of the posh, paneled dens inside the mansion played a key role in Disney's "NEWSIES" (1992). The mansion is open to the public for tours.

  • "Rydell High" in 1978's blockbuster musical "GREASE"
(starring John Travolta & Olivia Newton-John)
was really a mix of three actual high schools in the L.A. area.

  • The "GREASE" drive-in seen in the movie was real.

  • And the "GREASE" car race was actually in a local riverbed.

Find out where.

  • Jamie Leigh Curtis made her movie debut in the 1978 horror classic, "HALLOWEEN." The movie was supposed to be set in the little Midwestern town of Haddonfield, Illinois. But that tree lined residential street is really Orange Grove Avenue in suburban Hollywood, just north of Sunset Blvd. Most of the action in the movie took place in the Dole residence, where Jamie was baby-sitting. That house is located at 1530 Orange Grove. Her best friend was murdered while baby-sitting in the house across the street (the one with the jack-o-lantern on the porch), at 1537 Orange Grove.

  • On the other hand, 20 years later, in 1998, most of the scenes for the sequel "HALLOWEEN H20" were filmed at 1923 Michaeltorena Street, a private home in L.A.'s Silver Lake district. In the film, it passed as the fictitious 'Hillcrest School.'

  • The scenes in "HALLOWEEN H20" where Jamie walks around the streets of downtown "Hillcrest" were actually shot in the old downtown area of La Puente, CA, around the 15800 block that town's Main Street - about 20 miles east of the school's location.

  • The Goodyear blimp, stationed at the Goodyear airfield (at 19200 S. Main Street - at 192nd St.) in Carson, has been in countless commercials, and it played a feature role in the 1977 thriller "BLACK SUNDAY" (starring Robert Shaw & Bruce Dern), where terrorists hijacked the airship and used it as a giant bomb to attack the Superbowl.

  • The classic 1976 thriller "MARATHON MAN" took place in New York, so you probably wouldn't expect to find L.A. filming locations for this Dustin Hoffman classic. But here they are, several of them, all over Los Angeles. Just click on the poster to the right to read about them.

  • Scenes from the 1976 Brian DePalma horror epic, "CARRIE" (with Sissy SpacekJohn Travolta), were shot on location at the gym of the old Pier Avenue Junior High School (now Hermosa Beach Community Center) at 701 Pier Ave., in Hermosa Beach, California.

  • In the opening scene of the 1976 war movie "MIDWAY," a messenger runs across a lush garden estate, and delivers a message to Admiral Yamamoto that the Americans have just bombed Tokyo (which leads to the battle of Midway.) This scene was actually shot at the beautiful Japanese garden at the Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Gardens (located just south of Pasadena, at 1151 Oxford Road, in San Marino).

  • In the 1974 classic "CHINATOWN," there is a scene of private eye Jack Nicholson in a rowboat on a lake, shooting photos of a man cheating on his wife. The location was Echo Lake in Echo Park (1632 Bellevue Avenue), just west of downtown L.A. As one of the oldest parks in Los Angeles, it's often used in movies about our city's past, including 1981's crime drama "TRUE CONFESSIONS" (with Robert Di Niro and Robert Duvall.)
