Dexter Filming Locations: Nikki's Alley

The location: Nikki's Alley.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. An alleyway.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 5, of Season Four, "Dirty Harry".

Nikki Wald is half of the pair of so-called "Vacation Murderers", sought by police.

After she escapes from the police at her apartment house, Angel baits her with a planted newspaper story about her partner, Johnny Rose, having a sexually transmitted disease.

She sees the headline at a newsstand, and convinced that Johnny has cheated on her, shoots him to death.

In this scene, police have discovered her in an alley, lost in a drug daze, pointing a gun at the ground and mumbling to the dead Johnny as if he were lying in the alley.

After a standoff, she is captured when Quinn sneaks up behind her and Tasers her.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. An alley. But not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This scene was shot in an alley on the west side of B&B Hardware, the same place where they shot the scene of Trinity buying his hammer.

The hardware store is at 929 EWardlow Road (on the north side of the street), in north Long Beach, CA, just west of California Avenue.

The alley you see is bordered by the hardware store on its east side, and Mac's Barber Shop on its west side.

( The red-tile roofs you see in the background of some scenes are actually across the street (Wardlow), and are seen when the camera is facing south/southeast. The other shots are looking north/northwest up the alley.)

I shot the photos below in November 2009.

Here is an aerial photo of the alley. And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  I had already found the hardware store and the breakfast cafe, so when I saw this alley scene in the same episode, I had a hunch they probably shot it in the same Wardlow area.  After all, an alley is an alley. Why travel a long way to find one? So I looked for the red-tile roofs visible in some of the shots, found them on Wardlow, and then used Google StreetView to match the windows on the nearby building, and other details. Then I went there in person to confirm it, and shoot the photos.
