Dexter Filming Locations: Debra's Beach House

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Debra's Beach House

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A house on the beach.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In the Miami Shores section of Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. We first see it In Episode 5, of Season 6, "The Angel of Death".

We first see the beach house as a crime scene, when Anderson phones Dexter to tell him he needs his expertise on the scene.

A married couple, the Watsons, have been killed.  Appraising the situation, Dexter concludes that it was a murder-suicide.  That the wife shot her husband (after discovering he was cheating on her) and then shot herself.

We see the house again later in the same episode, when Debra (who is tired of living with Dex, and is looking for a place of her own) goes back to the house and negotiates a two-year lease with the landlord.

It shows up again in Episode 6 ("Just Let Go"), when Debra throws a housewarming party there (where a drunken Quinn makes a scene).

Deb's beach house becomes a regular location in both Seasons 7 & 8.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A beach house, but not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. I'm not sure why the writers had Anderson say this beach house was in Miami Shores, since (as far as I can tell, from aerial photos), the Miami Shores area doesn't have a beach - just houses fronting right on the water line.

In reality this was shot at 5468 E. Ocean Blvd, in Long Beach, CA.

As you travel southeast along the Long Beach coast on Ocean Blvd, you reach a fork where you either turn left and head into the popular Belmont Shore neighborhood via 2nd Street (which most of the traffic does), or you can continue on Ocean Blvd, to the right, as it heads out onto its own peninsula.

The peninsula is a narrow strip of land filled with residential homes, beach parking lots, and the occasional dock, sandwiched between sandy beaches on both sides.

On its southwest side is the Pacific Ocean.  On its northeast side is Alamitos Bay, which separates the peninsula from Naples Island.

There are few street numbers visible along this stretch of beach. So you'll need instructions to find it.

The 960 square foot, 1 bedroom beach house is located near the middle of the peninsula, just past 54th Street (between 54th & 55th) and just past a parking lot, on the right (south) side of Ocean Blvd.

There are actually two beach houses there, pretty close together. But it's not the first (brown) one you'll come to. It's the much smaller, white house just beyond it - in fact, it's so small that it's almost a beach shack.

The house faces the sea, with its back to Ocean Blvd, so you'll have to walk out on the sand to see the front of it. (I did just that to shoot the photo you see above.)

Despite its small size, it last sold for over $1 million.  So Debra could never afford it, in real life.

This location is only a short walk from the beach where they filmed the beach baptism scene, earlier this season. It's an equal distance from the location where Travis released the captive woman.
And it's about a mile southeast of the Belmont Pier area, where they filmed the scene of the victim filled with snakes.

It's also close to the parking lot where Angel & Quinn smoked, and to the Tooth Fairy's retirement village, Deb's shootout and Angel's restaurant - all from this 6th season.

(Most of the house interiors were filmed on a set built at the studio.)

[Warning: This is a private home, so don't trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything that might disturb the residents.]

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  I discovered this place back in 2006, when it was used as "Chili's beach house" in The O.C.
I did a page about it then, and shot photos of the house (which you see above).
