Seeing Stars: Where the Stars Become Fans

The Great Western Forum was yet another site for the eager fan to spot movie and TV stars. Besides the musical stars who perform in concert at this large arena (and the other stars who show up to see those concerts), the Lakers' basketball games also attracted a steady clique of Hollywood celebrities from December through June.

Everyone knows about Jack Nicholson's obsession with this NBA team. Jack was present at almost every home game to root on the Lakers, wearing his trademark sunglasses indoors, sitting on the aisle of Section 26 of the Loge area (about half-way down).

Most of these celebrities' seats were clustered on the Forum's Loge level, between Sections 24 & 29.

However, in 2000 the Lakers moved to a brand new home - the $300 million Staples Center, which was built adjacent to the L.A. Convention Center downtown. Tom Hanks was one of the first to buy a 12-seat luxury box at the new Staples Center - at a price of $257,500 a year. So has "Wheel of Fortune" host Pat Sajak. The luxury boxes there include a wet bar, refrigerator and entertainment center with a wide-screen digital television and two monitors with feeds to NHL and NBA games. So if you're looking for Jack and his fellow Lakers fans, you'll now have to head out to the Staples Center.

[See the separate page about concerts at the Forum.]

Getting there: The Forum is located at the southeast corner of Prairie Avenue and Manchester Boulevard, in Inglewood (just north of Hollywood Park). / From the San Diego (405) Freeway take the Manchester Blvd offramp. Go east on Manchester about a mile to Prairie Avenue (renamed Avenue of the Champions along this stretch). Turn right (south) on Prairie Avenue, then turn left into the Forum parking lot.
