Q. What is it supposed to be on the show? A. An apartment
house.
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show? A. Across the
street from the beach, somewhere in Newport Beach.
Q. When did we see it on the show? A. In Episode
16 (of season 2), "Blaze of Glory". It was the home to the new
editor of Julie's Newport Magazine, Carter Buckley, who turned
out to be an old acquaintance of Kirsten Cohen. We saw the apartment's
ocean view across the street, and saw a sign reading "Edgewater"
as Kirsten walked past it to his apartment. She left an old radical magazine
of his in his mailbox to inspire him to come out of retirement. (Kirsten
was later tempted to cheat on her husband with Carter, but successfully
resisted the temptation).
Q. What is it actually in real life? A. An apartment
house by the beach, but nowhere near Newport.
Q. Where can I find it in real life?
A. Carter's apartment is just a few yards away from Alex's apartment (which later became Trey's apartment). That "Edgewater" sign is real. You'll find the small apartment house at 304 Paseo de la Playa, in Redondo Beach. It's on the east side of that street, on the south side of Redondo Beach (near where the land begins its uphill climb to Palos Verdes). (I shot the photo below in 2006.) Here is a map link. Warning:
Remember that these are private apartments, so do not trespass on their
property,
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was? A. I had already found Alex's apartment when I saw the scene introducing Carter's apartment. When I saw the familiar view of the ocean out front (complete with the parking lot across the street), I assumed it was Alex's place. But when they they showed a different apartment house, I realized that it was almost certainly on the same street (Paseo de la Playa). The number 304 was partially visible in one scene, so I just drove down there and looked for the Edgewater sign out front. And sure enough, it was just a short ways from the Alex/Trey location.
