Seeing Stars: Where the Movies Were Shot (on Location)

Young Sheldon - Filming Locations

The hit CBS sitcom, "Young Sheldon", is a spin-off/prequel to the even more popular "The Big Bang Theory".

It tells the story of eccentric genius Sheldon Cooper's traumatic childhood, growing up with his "normal" family in East Texas.

First, you have probably already guessed that most of "Young Sheldon" is shot indoors, on a set inside a studio sound stage; a set which includes the interior of the Cooper home. More about that later...

. There aren't that many outdoor filming locations on the show, but there are three main real-world locations: Sheldon's house, Sheldon's school, and the Cooper family church.

None of them are really in Texas.  All three are right here in L.A.

First, there's Sheldon's home, which is supposed to be in Medford, Texas.

It isn't. It's actually in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley.

And somewhere along the line, the color of the house seems to have gone from yellow to blue.

You'll find the familiar ranch-style house, big trees and all, at
5501 Morella Ave
, in North Hollywood, CA
.

That's just three miles northwest of Warner Bros. Studio

(As you can see in the screencap below, the house number is
visible just to the left of the front door.)

Here is a matching Google StreetView:

[ Warning: this is a private home. Do not knock on their doors,
trespass on their property, or do anything else that might disturb the residents
. ]

The second real-life filming location is Sheldon's family church.

It was featured in the show's third episode, "Poker, Faith and Eggs", in which young Sheldon picks a fight with the local pastor during a church service.

This is a real church, and it's located literally right around the corner from Sheldon's house. In real life, it's the

First Christian Church of North Hollywood
at 4390 Colfax Ave, in North Hollywood
, CA.

You can visit the church's official website at www.fccnh.org

The third real life filming location for "Young Sheldon" is Sheldon's high school. (Yes, I said high school. He's a nine-year-old genius, remember?.)

This is an actual high school, which is also in the Valley, but is about six miles northwest of Sheldon's house and church.  In real life, this is

Van Nuys High School at
6535 Cedros Ave, in
Van Nuys, CA.

Here is a Google StreetView of the school:

And they didn't just shoot the exterior of the school. They also filmed the interior. You can see it's hallways here, in the episode where Sheldon became paranoid about catching the flu:

And in that same episode, the scene where Sheldon runs away from the school, and zigzags across the school's football field was also filmed at Van Nuys High (you can't miss that red "small gym" building to the right):

Now, about those indoor studio shots...

The series is filmed at the same major studio as "The Big Bang Theory", which is Warner Bros Studio, in Burbank, CA.

In Sheldon's case, they use sound stages 12 & 23.

You can take a guided tour of the Warner Bros Studio's famed back lot, which often includes visits to the sets of sitcoms like these two shows.

You can also try to get tickets to be part of the audience for the live taping of this show  or "The Big Bang Theory" (although tickets are usually in scarce supply due to the shows' popularity).
