DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: The Hooker Under the Bridge

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A spot under a bridge.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami, probably at the edge of Biscayne Bay.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 3, of Season 6, "Smokey and the Bandit".

The police (Dexter, Batista & Masuka) arrive at a crime scene, where they find the dead body of a woman lying under a bridge.

They roll her over, and Masuka notes that she has been beaten and manually strangled, and that she appears to be a prostitute.

Angel shows Dexter a 1977 Special Edition (SE) Pontiac Trans Am parked nearby, and says that when he was young, it was his dream car.  Dexter remarks that the car appeared in the movie "Smokey & the Bandit".

Quinn arrives late, and Angel sees him making out with some blonde.  Assuming Quinn is still going with Debra, Angel angrily confronts him, but Quinn tells him that he & Debra have broken up.

Quinn says that Deb dumped him because she was made lieutenant, and that she stole the job from Angel.  When Angel defends her, Quinn insults Angel, and they almost come to blows.

Dexter notes that one of the victim's front teeth is chipped, and wonders to himself whether someone tried to rip it out.  It reminds him of the M.O. of an old serial killer known as "The Tooth Fairy".

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. An area under a bridge.  Just not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This is the area under the southwest end of the Queensway Bridge, in Long Beach, CA.

They are on the rocky shoreline of the channel, just east of Queensway Drive, where that road passes beneath the bridge.

The bridge spans what is known as Queensway Bay (actually, the south end of the Los Angeles River), and joins mainland Long Beach (near the Aquarium) with the man-made port that houses the famed ocean liner, the Queen Mary.

This bridge should look familiar by now.

Dexter has filmed underneath the other (northeast) end of this bridge on two different occasions:

1. When Prado gave Dexter the bloody shirt (in Season One), and

2. When Lila stopped to look at the GPS unit she had stolen from Dexter (in Season Two).

The bridge was also visible in the background of several other Dexter scenes, including a Lundy/Deb stroll next to the Miami Tribune in Season 2; the body found on the rocks in Season 3; the scene where Prado visited Dexter on his boat in Season 3; and a scene where Trinity phoned Dexter in Season 4.

( But be warned that this end of the bridge is a pain to reach.  The streets in this area are a twisted maze of one-way roads.  Take one wrong exit, or make one wrong turn, and you find yourself heading in a direction you didn't intend to go, and unable to turn around for a miles...)

I shot the photo below in 2008, from under the other (east) end of the bridge.

And I shot this photo of the bridge from a boat launch just north of the bridge, at its west end.

Here is an aerial photo of the bridge.  And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  As I mentioned, I've been under this bridge before (shooting the photos above), and easily recognized it.  And the downtown skyline in the background told me that they were at the far west end of the bridge, rather than their usual east end.
