Dexter Filming Locations: The Tallahassee Bar

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: The Tallahassee Bar

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A bar.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. In Tallahassee, Florida.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 5, of Season 6, "The Angel of Death".

Quinn and Angel earlier went to the University of Tallahassee, where they met and interviewed Clarissa Porter, the former teacher's assistant to Professor Gellar (the lead suspect in the Doomsday murder case).

Before leaving, Quinn asked her if she knew a place nearby where they could get a drink.

In this scene, we see Quinn and Ms. Porter drinking in a bar.  Quinn seems slightly drunk, and is flirting with Ms. Porter, who seems more than open to the idea of hooking up .

They are briefly interrupted by Angel, who tells Quinn it's time to go.  But Quinn convinces Angel to let him take Professor Porter home for the night.

We later see Quinn and Ms. Porter back at her apartment.

Angel drops by, and while snooping through her stuff, comes across a book that belongs to Professor Gellar, filled with bizarre illustrations matching the recent Doomsday killings.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A gastropub.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. They filmed this scene at the same place they filmed the earlier nightclub scene: "33 Degrees - Harborside Pub", at Shoreline Village.

Only, instead of using the front patio (as they did for the nightclub scene), they used the interior of the cafe, as the bar.

The address is 423-A Shoreline Village Drive, in Long Beach, CA.

That's near the center of Shoreline Village, a nautical-themed shopping/dining village built around a marina.

33 Degrees sits facing the marina (north), with only the boardwalk separating it from the boats & water.

The pub has its own website, here.

In a first-rate example of how Dexter loves to cluster-shoot, they not only used this place for both the nightclub scene and this bar scene, they also used the Shoreline marina (right in front of the 33 Degrees), to film Travis's failed attempt to abduct a woman.

And if that's not enough, they used the parking lot right behind the pub to film the scene of Gellar & Travis running over a couple, and successfully abducting a woman.

Not long ago, this space was home to an Australian pub named "Springbok".

For the third season, they filmed the scene of Ramon Prado's bar inside Springbok.

And (in the same season) just outside the pub, on the boardwalk, they created a fake outdoor cafe, and filmed the scene where Dexter confronted a predator who had been stalking Astor.

I shot these photos below in November 2011.

Here is an aerial photo of the bar.  And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the 6th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Jason, Elaine, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, Jen, and others. My thanks to all of them.

Rick let me know that they were filming at Shoreline Village.  Then, it turns out that Jeff has a son (Eric) who landed a role as an extra in the Shoreline scenes.  Jeff let me know that they also filmed both the nightclub and bar scenes at the same cafe, and the abduction scenes nearby.  (Thanks, Jeff!)
