The
location: Prado's Golf Course. |
Q. What is it supposed to be on the show? A. A golf course. Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show? A. At a country
club in Miami, FL. Q. When did we see it on the show? A. In Episode 5 (of season 3), "Turning Biminese". Assistant District Attorney Miguel Prado is trying to win Dexter as a friend (and co-conspirator), so in this scene, he takes Dexter out golfing at his country club. We see them out on the links, playing a game of golf. First, Miguel asks to see (and then gushes over) the sonogram photo of Rita's expected baby - then jokes that all new fathers keep those photos in their pockets. He tells Dexter it will change his life forever. After flashing anger at other golfers (who hit a ball near them), Prado tells Dexter about a frustrating murder case: a man (Ethan Turner) who killed his first rich wife by staging an overdose, then used her money to hire a team of lawyers to get him off. Then he murdered his second wife as well, this time throwing her overboard from a cruise ship out in international waters, where Miguel has no jurisdiction. Dexter thinks to himself that perhaps he can be of help with his own brand of justice. Later,
Dexter does indeed kill the guy (in Bimini), and it turns out that Prado
deliberately planted the idea in Dexter's head to see if he would do it.
Q. What is it actually in real life? A. A golf course - but not in Miami.
Q. Where can I find it in real life? A. This scene was shot far from the usual "Dexter" haunts: on the golf course at the Pacific Palms Resort, at 1 Industry Hills Parkway, near the La Puente / City of Industry border. It's about 25 miles east of Los Angeles; north of the Pomona (60) Freeway, just west of N. Azuza Ave. That's about 10 miles southwest of the Pomona's L.A. County Fairgrounds, and about seven miles northeast of Rose Hills Memorial Park. It's also just a mile and a half north of the Puente Hills Mall, where they filmed the time-traveling scenes from "Back to the Future". The fountain seen in the golf scene is west of the tall building seen in the same shot. The camera is looking east in that shot. That same building is where you'll find the country club restaurant where Dexter, Rita & the Prados dined on a patio.
Here is an aerial
photo of the golf course. And here is a map
link. ( Don't confuse
this golf course with the driving range
seen in Epidode 7.)
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was? A. This one was tricky. There are a lot of golf courses in the greater Los Angeles area, and (naturally) the first ones I checked were in the areas where "Dexter" usually films: Long Beach, San Pedro, Marina del Rey and Hollywood. I was looking, of course, for that big fountain, and the tall building seen behind Dexter & Prado when they were out on the fairway. I spent a long time on the hunt, but it was nowhere to be found. Then,
I had a real stroke of luck. I stumbled across this
page on the resort's website, which detailed the "Dexter"
shoot at the resort. All I had to do then was check aerial photos and make
sure that the fountain and tall building matched. And, of course,
they did.
