A. A double-decker driving range.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

A. At a golf course in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

A. In Episode 7 (of Season 3), "Easy As Pie".

Dexter and Miguel Prado are at a golf course driving range, hitting balls and discussing murder.

They start out talking about Albert Chung, a current fugitive from murder charges, but Miguel quickly brings the discussion around to attorney Ellen Wolf.

He says that the Albert Chung is "just a symptom", but that "the root cause" is the person who put him back on the streets, his "blood sucking, soulless defense attorney, Ellen Wolf" (emphasizing his anger with a particularly hard swing).

It's clear that he wants Dexter to help kill her.

Dexter is somewhat stunned, and asks if she didn't just do her job of defending her client.

Prado says that she "bends & twists the lawn until it's unrecognizable".

Dexter says that if she hasn't actually killed someone...

Prado says he's being too literal, and asks him to keep an open mind and do some research.

Dexter agrees to look into it, to preserve their friendship, and later does check into her record, but finds that she has simply done her job. He also learns that Prado has a personal motive for wanting her out of the way.

When he tells him he won't kill her, Prado explodes in anger, revealing a side that Dexter hasn't seen before.

But the next day, he assures Dexter that he is dropping the matter, and says that he learned that Ellen Wolf helped capture the fugitive Albert Chung. His opinion of her has changed - or so he says.

Unfortunately, soon Ellen Wolf goes missing.  And Dexter eventually finds her buried in a shallow grave at the cemetery.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

A. A real driving range, but far from Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. This scene was shot way off the beaten track for "Dexter".

And oddly enough, they didn't use the double-decker driving range at the golf course where they earlier filmed the scenes of Miguel & Dexter out on the fairways.

Instead, they filmed it at the double-decker driving range at the Rio Hondo Golf Course, at 10627 Old River School Road, in Downey, CA.

It's just west of the bloody socks murder scene, and the road where Debra warns Anton, both locations from the same episode 7 (an example of the production's tendency to "cluster shoot" in an area).

The city of Downey is located about 9 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, and about 13 miles north/northeast of their usual stomping ground of Long Beach. The city is in a triangle formed by the Long Beach (710) freeway (on the west), the Century (105) freeway (on the south), and the 605 freeway to the east.

The golf course is about a mile east of the Long Beach (710) Freeway, and a few blocks north of Firestone Blvd. The driving range is on the northeast side of the golf course.

They also filmed the Sporting Goods store scene at Rio Hondo (in Episode 5).

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A. I didn't.  I searched for months on this one, to no avail. I looked at what seemed to be every driving range in Los Angeles county without luck. Several came close (the one in La Mirada, for instance), but none matched.

Finally, I got a generous tip from a departed artist, that solved the mystery once and for all. (Thanks!)
