The
location: Miami Metro Investigates
the bridge hanging murder
Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A. A police investigation into a murder.
Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
A. Near a bridge in Miami, Florida.
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. We see this scene in Episode 4, of Season 1.
After a rollerblading couple spot a
dead boy hanging from a bridge, the police arrive and set up camp
nearby, putting up the usual yellow tape and dealing with the inquisitive press .
The fire department is on the scene as well, and uses a ladder to gently take down the body of the murdered boy.
Capt. Aaron
Spencer, still nursing a grudge against LaGuerta, sends her away from
the main investigation to “Prostitute Park” to look into a lesser case
involving a strangled hooker.
Dexter has a particularly visceral reaction to seeing a child murdered. Seeing this, Harry tells Dexter to go with LaGuerta.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
A. The parking lot of a hotel.
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This scene was filmed on the opposite side of the Queensway Bridge from where the rollerblading couple was when they spotted the body.
There is a large hotel on the north side of the bridge, the Residence Inn by Marriott, located at 600 Queensway Drive, in Long Beach, CA.
( On the south side of the bridge is another hotel, the Hotel
Maya, but It has a much lower profile, while the Residence Inn is about
11 stories tall. )
They shot the scene in the parking lot south of the hotel tower, just a few yards away from the bridge .
The location is also close to a boat launch that was used in filming a scene from the original Dexter series (where yet another body was discovered ).
The Queensway bridge leads from the mainland Long Beach out to Pier J, where the Queen Mary is permanently docked as a hotel and tourist attraction. The Queen Mary is less than a mile southeast of this hotel.
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. One good thing about tracking down Dexter filming locations is that the
journey will eventually take you to just about every interesting
location in Long Beach, especially along the coastline, places you might
otherwise not have even known existed...
After eight years of it, I pretty much know the city by heart.
I visited this area years ago, while shooting photos of that boat launch, and you can easily see the Queensway bridge is right next to the location. So it was an easy spot to identify.
