Dexter Filming Locations: At the Marina with Travis

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: At the Marina with Travis

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A marina.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 11, of Season 6, "Talk to the Hand".

Dexter baits Travis into coming to him, by first defacing an angel statue, and then sending Travis a taunting video.

In the video (shot at a marina), Dexter deliberately stands in front of his boat, the Slice of Life.

Sure enough, Travis takes the bait, finds out where the boat is docked, and shows up at the marina, after dark, just as Dexter expected.

However, what Dexter didn't expect was that he would suddenly get a nosebleed and a bout of weakness - brought on by his earlier exposure to the "Wormwood" poison gas.

As a result, when he tries to bring down Travis with his hypodermic, he's too weak, and Travis gains the upper hand in the struggle.

Travis injects Dexter with his own tranquilizer.

Dexter wakes in a small boat, tied up, and surrounded by gasoline - with Travis about to torch it.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A marina.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This is part of the Shoreline Marina in Long Beach, CA.

To be more precise, there is a half-mile long breakwater which starts near Parker's Lighthouse restaurant at Shoreline Village and then runs out south into the Pacific, toward the Queen Mary, then turns southeast, and then east, forming a barrier protecting some 1,800 docked boats within.

Travis walks north down the ramp from the breakwater, down onto the dock, where Dexter is lying in wait for him.

This breakwater is wide enough that it contains a two-lane street which leads out to the end of the breakwater.  It's here, at the far southeast end of this Shoreline marina breakwater that you'll find the docks where they shot this scene.

This large marina is not to be confused with the much smaller portion that is located inside Shoreline Village (where they filmed the scene of Travis failing to abduct a woman).

This much larger marina is located across the Village parking lot to the southwest, and is large enough that you could fit the entire Village (small marina and all) inside of it, several times over.

The far end of this breakwater is where, back in the third season, they filmed the scene where the police discovered the body of a young victim of The Skinner (Wendell Owens).  Only that scene was shot up on the breakwater itself.

This scene was shot down on one of the long docks which extend north from this end of the breakwater, each dock containing numerous boat slips.

They used the very last dock, at the far (southeast) end of the breakwater. (The Slice of Life was docked on the west side of this dock.)

I shot the photo below from the end of the breakwater.
The camera is looking north, towards downtown Long Beach.  The dock used in the scene is to the left..

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  There are two very recognizable buildings seen in the background at the start of this night scene: the landmark Villa Riviera and the International Tower (which was featured in the opening of "Lethal Weapon").  Both buildings are located where Shoreline Drive meets Ocean Blvd.  By simply drawing a line from those two buildings down to the marina, it becomes clear where they filmed.

On the left side of the dock in the scene, you can also see a red & white boat parked parallel to the dock, something you don't see at any of the docks except the one at the very end of this breakwater. It was in the empty slip you see to the right (east) in my photo above.
