Dexter Filming Locations: LaGuerta Warns Doakes

The location: LaGuerta Meets Doakes.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. An outdoor area near the waterfront.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in downtown Miami.

A banner posted nearby reads "Downtown Miami Street Festival".

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 6 (of Season 2), "Dex, Lies and Videotape".

Having learned that Doakes was tailing Dexter, and worried that Doakes is about to lose his job as a result of his erratic behavior, LaGuerta meets with him, outdoors, and warns him to lay off Dexter.

He tells her that his instincts tell him that there's something dangerous about Dexter.

She tells him that his instincts haven't been very good lately, and that he is becoming obsessed with Dexter. She says that if Dexter files a complaint, Doakes will lose his job.

But he refuses to heed her warnings (a decision he will later come to regret).

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A pedestrian promenade near a seaside amusement center - but not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This scene was shot on the wide brick walkway running along the north side of the Shoreline Village marina, in Long Beach, between the marina (on the south) and the highway (Shoreline Drive) on the north.

This section of walkway lies between the Yard House restaurant (on the east), and the pedestrian overpass/bridge which spans Shoreline Drive (on the west).

The walkway leads from Shoreline Village to the new Pike / Rainbow Harbor amusement area (where they filmed the police awards ceremony for the second season finale).

The colorful buildings of Shoreline Village are visible in the background, including the green barn used as the comic book store in another episode.

And they are standing right next to the dock of the colorful speed boat which appears in Episode One's breakwater murder scene as the "Banana Boat Tour Boat" (even though that earlier scene was shot with the same boat docked on the other side of the bay).

To reach Shoreline Village, just take the Long Beach (710) Freeway south (almost to its end) to Shoreline Drive in Long Beach, then head east on Shoreline Drive, past the Aquarium, and the Village will be on your right (south) side, at Shoreline Village Drive.

( This exact stretch of walkway was also seen in two different scenes in "The O.C."  The pedestrian overpass ramp seen behind Doakes (in the fourth photo from the top) was converted into a faux restaurant called The Toledo Grill in one episode, and the walkway itself was glimpsed in another OC scene where Seth & Ryan were eating pizza on a bench. )

Here is an aerial photo of the area with the spot marked.  And here is a map link.

(I shot the photos below in 2008)

(The photo above was shot looking southwest towards the pedestrian overpass.)

(The photo above was shot looking southeast, towards the Yard House restaurant at Shoreline Village)

(This is the Rocket speedboat, docked next to the walkway. It was also seen in Episode 1 of Season 2.)

Numerous other scenes from "Dexter" have been shot in this general area, including multiple scenes at Shoreline Village, the area around the Queensway Bridge, at the Aquarium, and at the Coast Long Beach Hotel.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. This was an easy one.

I've been to Shoreline Village often, and it's easy to recognize.

But beyond that, I had previously photographed this exact spot for a location page from "The O.C.", and later for a shot of the "Banana Boat" from episode 1 of the second season. In the background behind LaGuerta and Doakes, you can clearly see Shoreline Village, the boat, and even the pedestrian overpass.
