Dexter Filming Locations: LaGuerta at Matthews' Boat

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: LaGuerta at Matthews' Boat

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A boat dock at a marina.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 9, of Season 7, "Helter Skelter".

LaGuerta is snooping around former police Chief Matthews' boat (Ocean Master), when he suddenly appears.

It's obvious that he isn't happy to see her, since she helped orchestrate his being driven out of Miami Metro.

She tells him that she believes that the Bay Harbor Butcher is alive and still active.

Matthews tells her she's crazy - that Doakes was the Bay Harbor Butcher.

She tells him about the blood slide she found at the church, that bad people are still going missing, and that she has compiled a list of Miami employees who own boats.

It irks him to see that his own name is on her list.  He reminds her that he had a hernia operation at the time of the murders, that would rule him out as a suspect.

She asks him if any of the names on the list look familiar.

He tells her to go home, that she'll get no help from him.

But later, he shows up at Ocean Promenade and tells her he will help her out in return for her helping him to get his retirement.

Matthews' dock shows up again in Episode 11 ("Do You Hear What I Hear"), when Dexter goes to visit Matthews.  Matthew is decorating his boat for Christmas.

Matthews tells Dexter that LaGuerta thinks he may be the Bay Harbor Butcher.

Dexter lies and tells Matthews that Doakes owned a boat (making it possible for him to have dumped the bodies).  Matthews seems convinced, and tells Dexter he'll get LaGuerta to lay off.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A dock at a marina.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. This is very the same dock at the Shoreline Marina (in Long Beach) that they used last season for the scene where Dexter confronted Travis and lost.

It's located at the very tip of the long breakwater that starts near Shoreline Village and wraps out (towards the Queen Mary) around the Shoreline Marina.

There's a city/marina building at the end of this breakwater (it houses the Harbor Master's office), and you see it behind LaGuerta at the start of the scene. This dock is the last one at the end of the breakwater, extending north from near that city building, back out towards downtown Long Beach.

Dexter has used this area before. Back in the third season, they filmed the scene where the police discovered the body of a young victim of The Skinner (Wendell Owens).  That scene was shot up on the end of the breakwater.

I shot the photos below from the end of the Shoreline breakwater.

This is the marina building seen behind LaGuerta (the camera is looking east):

Here, the camera is looking north, towards downtown Long Beach.  The dock used in the scene is to the left..

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  The decisive clue here was the distinctive building seen behind LaGuerta at the start of the scene:

I shot photos of that same building (and that same dock) a while back, for another Dexter scene.  So I recognized it when I saw it again.
