Dexter Filming Locations: LaGuerta & Matthews, parked and talking about cover-up

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: LaGuerta & Matthews conspire

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A parking lot.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In an earlier episode, Miami Metro found the nude body of a dead call girl in a hotel room.

They concluded that she probably overdosed, but Dexter noted evidence that someone had moved the body after death, probably attempting CPR in a failed attempt to revive her.

LaGuerta mysteriously told Debra to close the case, and write it off as a mere overdose.  She claimed it was simply to reduce the number of open homicide cases at the Department. But it appeared she might be covering up for someone.

Deb closed the case, but didn't feel right about it.  So, she later confronted LaGuerta and told her she is re-opening the case.

In this short scene, we find out LaGuerta she was covering for.

We see Lieutenant LaGuerta get into the parked car of Deputy Chief Matthews.

She tells him that Debra is going to re-open the case, and it becomes clear that it was Matthews who was in the room with the call girl.  He talks about giving her CPR and doing all he could.

LaGuerta says that if the truth had come out, it would have ended his career.

He gets angry and says "Doesn't Morgan know when to back off?"  To which LaGuerta replies that Debra's tenacity is the reason he hired her, against her advice.

Matthews says that she must be stopped.  LaGuerta tells him not to worry.

    Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A parking lot.

    Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This parking lot is next to the Highland Park Senior Citizens Center, at 6152 N. Figueroa Street, in the Highland Park section of Los Angeles.

But it's not the large parking lot to the north, which you'd expect.

Instead, it's a small, narrow lot that runs between the south side of the Senior Center and Marmion Way.  It's almost invisible from aerial photos, hidden by large trees.

Their car was parked slanted to the southeast.  The broad street in the background, that we very briefly glimpse as LaGuerta walks to the car, is Figueroa Street.  The chain link fence, in front of their car, runs along Marmion Way.

The senior center is located in a small park on the east side of Figueroa, between York Blvd & Arroyo Glen Street.

If Arroyo Glen Street sounds familiar, it should.  Because that's the street where you'll find Gellar's church & lair.  (In fact, Marmion Way and two fences are the only thing separating the parking lot from the "church" property.)

No doubt, that's one of the reasons they decided to film here.  Likewise, it's the same reason they filmed at another address on Arroyo Glen Street: the cougar's house.

And this cluster of three locations is only about half a mile northeast of two other Season 6 locations: the barber shop (where Dexter killed the gang leader, Julio), and the fake coffee stand where Debra told Angel about her promotion.

This is a Google StreetView of that narrow parking lot, as seen from Marmion Way.

    Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

      A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the 6th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Jason, Elaine, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.

I knew from Rick and another source that they had filmed this scene at one of the parking lots near the Senior Center.  But then it got tricky trying to figure out which of the parking lots they used.

Because, when I checked the bigger lot, on the north side, I couldn't line up the few items we can see in the background of the scene: a grass lawn (and a building's corner) behind them, a broad street beyond that lawn, and a chain link fence in front of their car.

Finally though, I discovered that there was a smaller lot, almost hidden by trees (in aerial photos), running along the south side of the center, next to Marmion Way.  One I spotted it, it was easy then to spot the lawn, trees, and building that were in the scene.  And StreetView let me confirm the chain link fence.
