Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode
1, of Season 6, "Those Kinds of Things".
In a very brief scene, Professor Gellar and Travis stand, silhouetted against a sunset sky, looking out over the water.
The Professor quotes a verse from the Book of Revelation (13:1) about a serpent with seven heads rising from the sea -- a reference to their recent murder, in which they filled the victim's body with seven snakes they had captured in a swamp.
Travis asks him: "So, it's begun?"
"Yes, it's begun", the Professor says, with a knowing chuckle.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This scene was shot on the Belmont Pier, in Long Beach, CA.
(Its formal name is Belmont Veterans Memorial Pier.)

The Professor and Travis are standing
on the west side of the pier, looking northwest towards downtown Long
Beach. The buildings you see on the horizon line Ocean Blvd, the main coastal road of Long Beach.
You'll find the pier near the south end of 39th Place, only a few blocks southeast of Harrison's preschool.
The original Belmont Pier was
built in 1915. In 1967, the wooden pier was replaced by the new,
concrete version there today. It's 1,620 feet long.
In the earlier scene where the
police find the dead man full of snakes, the body is found on a beach,
under a pier. This is the same pier.
They've filmed around the Belmont pier many times in the past, from the beach at its foot, to the beach on its east side, to the adjacent La Palapa cafe. But I think this is the first time they actually shot out on the pier itself.
I shot this photo of the pier in 2011. The camera is looking southwest.
This is the entrance to the pier.
And this is a view from out on the pier, showing the same skyline seen silhouetted in the sunset scene:
The brown building near the center is 1900 Ocean Blvd - where they filmed a murder scene for later in the season.
.(The image is fuzzy because it was blown up - from a small section of a much larger photo.).
Here is an aerial
photo of the pier. Here is a Google StreetView. And here is a map
link.

Interestingly, the biblical verse quoted by Gellar & Travis,
Revelations 13:1, is a misquote. The actual verse doesn't mention a
serpent or snake. It tells of a vision of a beast (with seven heads) rising from the sea - not a serpent. ]
UPDATE:
The Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, mentioned in this article, was demolished in early 2015. They discovered seismic deficiencies in
the old building, so they torn it down. It will eventually be replaced with
a new pool.
La
Palapa, the patio café which was the location of several different
"Dexter" scenes over the years, was attached to the west side of the
pool building, so it was torn down as well.
Here, for the record, is a Google StreetView of the pool, when it was standing.
And here is a YouTube video of the historic building being torn down. |
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In previous seasons, I've
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the 6th season, though,
I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I
already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Jason,
Elaine, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.
In this instance, I found this spot long before the first episode even aired, after seeing an early Dexter trailer
for the 6th Season. Since I've walked on the pier before, I
recognized those distinctive lamps, and was able to indentify the
buildings on the Ocean Blvd skyline.
