Dexter Filming Locations: Angel & Maria LaGuerta at the beach

The location: Angel & Maria near the beach..

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A spot near the beach.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 9 (of Season 4), "Hungry Man".

Angel Batista and Maria LaGuerta have been carrying on a secret office romance and risk being
    fired by staying together.

In this scene, they are sitting near the beach, drinking spiked Icee's.

Troubled by the sudden deaths he's seen on the job, Angel tells Maria he loves her, shouting it to the world.

At first, she refuses to say it back, fearing something bad might happen to him if she does. But then she relents and tells him she loves him.

The scene ends with them embracing.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A spot near the beach - just not in Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. They filmed this next to the Belmont Pier, in Long Beach, CA.

Angel & Maria are sitting on a low barrier wall that separates a parking lot from the sandy beach. That parking lot is between the south ends of Termino Ave & 39th Place - east of the Belmont pier and west of the Olympic Pool building.

The wall runs east-west along the south edge of that parking lot.

Both the pier and that building can be seen behind them in various shots.

When the camera shows the pier behind them, it is looking southwest. When it shows the Olympic building behind them, it is looking east/southeast.

Over the previous seasons, they have filmed several other scenes in the same Belmont Pier area, including a beach patio cafe scene shot at the La Palapa restaurant (which is partially visible behind them), the scene of Debra talking to transvestite hookers (in an alley about 100 yards to the northeast), and the beach scene where a perverse photographer stalked Astor.

I shot the photos below in December 2009.

Here is an aerial photo. And here is a map link.

UPDATE: The Belmont Plaza Olympic Pool, mentioned in this article, was demolished in early 2015.  They discovered seismic deficiencies in the old building, so they torn it down. It will eventually be replaced with a new pool.

La Palapa, the patio café which was the scene of several different "Dexter" scenes over the years, was attached to the west side of the pool building, so it was torn down as well.

Here, for the record, is a Google StreetView of the pool, when it was standing.

And here is a YouTube video of the historic building being torn down.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  I've been to the Belmont pier and its plaza on several occasions (including times I was shooting photos of other Dexter locations). The pier is visible in the background of these scenes, and I simply recognized it when I saw it.
