Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A. Dexter in a truck, driving away from Iron Lake.
Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
A. Just outside of Iron Lake, NY.
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A.
This is the second very brief shot of Dexter driving, and it is very
similar to the first shot. But this moment comes after he has visited Cedar Pines clothing store, and this time he is passing a green road sign that reads . New York City - 70 miles .
We see the moment in Episode 1, of Season 1.
This is a very brief shot of Dexter behind the wheel of a stolen truck.
After stopping at the clothing store to buy a new set of clothes (and
get out of the hospital garb), we see Dexter driving away from Iron Lake
for the very last time. As he does, he notices the telltale road sign
letting him know he has 70 miles before he reaches NYC.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
A. An actual highway in upstate New York, but with a fake traffic sign.
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A.This scene was shot with a camera looking north from approximately 510 Hillside Ave, on the border between Sparkill and Piermont, NY.
It appears that they put the fake green New York City- 70 miles sign right over the real green sign that actually reads Village of Piermont
In reality, its only 26 miles from Piermont to NYC, not 70.
They shot this second driving scene on the same street (RTE 9W) as the first driving shot, but about a mile further north up that road.
Dexter is driving in the opposite direction as before, and the irony
is that Dexter is driving in the wrong direction, heading north on RTE
9W, when Manhattan is to the south. He's actually driving away from New York City (but still manages to get there for this episode is over).
Here is a matching street view from the same spot:
(complete with the real green sign)
