Dexter: Resurrection Filming Locations:

DEXTER: Resurrection Filming Locations - the actual places where the TV show Dexter: Resurrection was filmed.

The Location
: Dexter buys a hot dog in Times Square.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

A. The brightly-lit streets of Times Square.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

A.  In downtown Manhattan.

Q. When did we see it on the show?
A. We see this scene in Episode 4 of Season 1 of Resurrection.

A. After finally leaving Leon Prater's mansion, where he was forced to settle for fried cauliflower, our ravenous carnivore Dexter is seen walking through the brightly-lit Times Square, where he stops to buy a hot dog. Make that two hot dogs.

( Did you ever notice that Dexter tends to buy two of everything he eats?  Back in Original Sin, at the La Palmita restaurant, he orders two Cuban sandwiches. In the lobby bar of the Empire Hotel, he orders two cheeseburgers, and here in Times Square, he orders two chili dogs. )

While he’s eating, he looks up and sees a giant electronic billboard advertising an upcoming star-studded Gala being hosted by none other than billionaire Leon Prater. (We will see more of this Gala later on the show.)

Q. What is it actually in real life?

A. This scene was actually shot in Times Square.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

A. The early parts of this scene were actually shot around 168 W 46th St., but for some reason the 1540 number maps to 1540 Broadway, even though it isn't Broadway. ( The addresses in Times Square can get a bit strange, considering that you have three different streets converging at a single intersection, with Broadway cutting a diagonal slash through the area.

  • In the scene, Dexter is walking west on the north side of the W 46th St. ), just east of 7th Ave.

  • The building with the number 1540 on the side is seen while the camera is looking east from the south side of the street at night.

Here is a matching StreetView of the same street:
(note number 1540 on the right side, and
the arch-shaped supports for a sidewalk shed on the left side. )

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  And here is a map link.

  • The distinctive arches on the left are only supports for a “sidewalk shed” (a temporary walkway over the sidewalk, erected to protect pedestrians during construction).
Countless StreetViews of New York reveal that these sidewalk sheds are eyesores cluttering up just about everywhere in downtown New York. A very similar shed is seen in a latter scene where Mia is walking down the street towards a bar.

  • The hot dog cart is across the street from Val Cafe (the address of which is 1540 Broadway, even though its StreetView address maps to 166 W 46th St,  New York).
The cart itself was a temporary prop brought in for the production, although there are certainly real hot dog carts in the Times Square area.

  • When Dexter looks up at the giant sign about Prater's upcoming Gala, that electronic billboard is on the side of the New York Marriott Marquis hotel, which is located at 1535 Broadway, at the southwest corner of W 46 Street & 7th Ave.

And here is a matching StreetView of that
electronic billboard that Dexter looks up at:

Here is an aerial photo of the location.  And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

A.  I immediately noticed the rather blurry number 1540 on the right side of the street in the early part of this scene. So I checked various 1540s in the area until I found a StreetView that showed the exact matching image.

As for the hot dog cart, I saw an early paparazzi photo, shot while they were filming this scene, and in a window reflection I could see a red sign that drew my attention because it was using a font very similar to the well-known Walt Disney font. It was backwards in the glass reflection, but when I reversed the image in Photoshop, I could see that it was advertising Val Cafe. And when I googled for the address of Val Cafe, it took me to a StreetView exactly matching what we saw in this scene, including that 1540 number and the distinctive arches of that sidewalk shed.

With  the giant electronic billboard advertising the Gala, if you take a close look you can see the words “Marriott Marquis” both above and below that billboard. And when I took a look at the corner of Times Square where that hotel is located, I got a matching view of that giant billboard.
