A. In the town square on Main Street of the small town of Iron Lake, New York.
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode 1, of Season 9, "Cold Snap".
Although we
see Christmas decorations all over Iron Lake, we only have one brief
glimpse of this Christmas Festival, near the end of the episode, when
Dexter has killed Matt, and is driving through town on his way to stop
Harrison from boarding a bus.
He and Angela had a date to
meet at the Christmas Tree Festival, but he was forced to stand her up
because of the twin emergencies,
But as he drives down the
town's main street, we can see a small crowd gathered in an open space,
with a Christmas tree and lots of lights. Angela is there, with her
daughter. But Dexter just drives right past.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
A. This is simply a small empty lot.
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This empty lot
is along the south side of Bridge Street in Shelburne falls, Massachusetts. It is the
very same empty lot next to which Dexter Parks when he first arrives in
town. It is located at the southeast corner of Bridge Street and Deerfield Avenue.
It was the former site
of a furniture store, before the store closed and the building was torn
down a few years ago. The address of that store
(and the now-empty lot) was 19 Bridge St.
They
probably wouldn't have gotten away with using such a small lot if the
scene had been a lengthy one, in the daytime. But it was a very brief
scene, after dark, only glimpsed briefly as Dexter drives by. So all they
had to do was put up the Christmas tree, string a few lights, a snowman, and add
the crowd for a festive look.
But they also put up a number of fanciful,
cabin-like booths right across Deerfield Avenue from the lot, giving it
more of a holiday appearance.
This
same location is glimpsed later in Episode 8, when we see Harrison stop
to watch Audrey load a Christmas tree on top of her car. In that scene,
Harrison is standing in front of Bon Salon, Right across the street
from (west of) this Christmas tree lot.
Above is a poster placed in some Shelburne Falls
store windows, advertising the Christmas Tree Festival.
Here is a Google StreetView of that empty lot:
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A.
This was simple, because I recognized that row of small Christmas
cottages that they had erected along the west side of
Deerfield Avenue, next to Bon Salon. Those little booths were visible in a number of different scenes.
And I had also seen photos
shot during the actual filming, which showed the booths being put up,
and that allowed me to figure out exactly where they would be before I
even watched the show.
