Dexter Filming Locations: Christine-Trinity Phone Call

The location: Christine Phones Trinity.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. City streets and a hardware supply company.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 10 (of Season 4), "Lost Boys".

    Christine, the nosy reporter who is having an affair with Quinn, turns out to be the daughter of
    Arthur Mitchell, the Trinity Killer.

    In an attempt to protect her serial killer father, she has shot and killed Agent Lundy (who was investigating the Trinity case), and she now fears that the police may be closing in on her.

    So, in this scene, we see her cell phoning her distant father while she's driving.

    He receives the call while he is busy loading cement into the back of his car, at a "Hardware Contracting Supply" company. (That cement will play a role later in the same episode.)

    Obviously frightened, she tells him she really needs to see him (apparently he only sees her
    about twice a year), but he coldly dismisses her pleas and hangs up on her.

    She begins to break down and cry, pitifully sobbing (to herself): "I think I'm in trouble..."

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. At least two different streets, plus a studio lot.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This phone scene was shot in a number of different locations, then patched together:

    • One of the clips of Christine talking (while driving) was shot with her car heading west on Willow Street, in Signal Hill, CA (near Long Beach). Look carefully at the second photo from the top, and you'll see her pass a large "Howard's" TV store.  That store is at 3300 EWillow. (An aerial photo.
      )
    • (Not coincidentally, that's very close to the city tow yard, where they took Dexter's car after his accident.)

    • But the next clip of her talking while driving is several miles away (see the fourth photo from the top). This time, she's heading north on Atlantic Avenue (in Long Beach).  She comes to a stop (while crying) next to a medical/dental office building at 3759 Atlantic Ave, just south of Bixby Road. (An aerial photo.
      )

    • Meanwhile, Trinity's "hardware store" is actually just a quickly-constructed outdoor set in the south portion of the Sunset-Gower studio lot, where they film "Dexter". In fact, it's the same corner where they often create the outdoor catering truck scenes for the Miami police station.
      (An aerial photo.
      )

      If you look closely, as Trinity's loading his car (see the top photo), you'll glimpse a sign, on a white building in the background, reading "Fountain Avenue Market". That market is at 6010 Fountain Avenue, in Hollywood, literally right across the street (south of) the studio's low south wall. (An aerial photo.
      )
    • The market is located in a strip mall that "Dexter" producers have used several times before. In the second season, they used the east end of that strip mall as the Swamp Bar.
      In the third season, they used the other (west) end of the strip mall as the tailor shop where Dexter picked up his wedding tux - and was abducted by The Skinner (see the upholstery shop in the photo below). It was also used in the second season as the interior of the voodoo shop in the second season, where Dexter fails to kill a voodoo priest.

    The Fountain Ave Market is located just to the left of the tailor shop/upholstery store, as you can see below.

    I shot the photo below in 2009.

    And here is a map link of all four locations.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  It was easy to spot the large Howard's store in the first Christine shot. And Google StreetView confirmed that the Signal Hill/Long Beach store on Willow (near the tow yard) was the right Howard's.

    The second Christine location took a little more effort. But fortunately, the street number (3759) was visible on a building behind her, so it was just a matter of tracking down the right street. After checking Long Beach street numbers, I found the 3700 blocks in the Bixby area. I knew that they had filmed in that area this season, so it was an obvious possibility. Google StreetView let me find the matching street there.

    As for Trinity's location, I almost certainly would have spotted the Fountain Avenue Market on my own, but a fan, Jeff, beat me to it, emailing me about it before I even had a chance to watch the episode. (Thanks, Jeff!)
