Seeing Stars: Where the Stars Play

(at the Sunset Marquis Hotel)
1200 N Alta Loma Road,
West Hollywood, CA. / (310) 657-1333

The Sunset Marquis Hotel has long been known as a hangout for rowdy rock musicians, but now they have added The Whisky Bar, a watering hole that instantly became popular with such celebs as U2, Jeff Beck, UB40, the Black Crowes and Nirvana. The bar's walls are lined with photos of rock stars such as Alice Cooper and Tina Turner.

Other stars spotted at the Bar include Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Dave Foley ("NewsRadio",) Winona Ryder, Kevin Spacey, Rod Stewart, Ben Stiller, Drew Barrymore. Charlie Sheen, Metallica, Forest Whitaker, Ben Stiller, Slash, and "Friends" Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer & Matthew Perry.

The hotel recently built a recording studio near the bar, where rockers can lay down their new tracks (for $2,000 a day), then pipe the results directly into sound system of The Whisky Bar; the musicians can relax there afterward and listen to their own creations. (The private villas in the back of the hotel are also popular with celebrities.)

According to the L.A. Times, John Stamos ("Thieves," "Full House") says it's "a fun place. It's dark and there's some drinking involved. It's a very small, tiny place, so you're sitting right on top of people. Cindy Crawford's husband, Randy Gerber owns it, I think. You always run into fun people, and there's always trouble to be had there."

The Whisky Bar was also the scene of a superstar dispute in March of 1994. Actor Don Johnson got into an insult-and-shoving match with actor Gary Oldman, after the latter refused Johnson's offer to buy him a drink. The scuffle was broken up by actor James Caan (star of "The Godfather").

Getting there: The Sunset Marquis Hotel isn't your usual 20-story tower. Instead, it's just three levels, with 102 suites and 12 private garden villas, tucked away off in a residential neighborhood off the Sunset Strip, one block west of La Cienega, and three blocks east of Spago.
