The
location:
Hollywood.
Q. What is it supposed to be on the show? A. In and around
a nightclub called 'Luna-Chics' in Hollywood.
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show? A. Hollywood,
California.
Q. When did we see it on the show? A. In Episode
22 (of season
1) - "The L.A.". After Marissa and Summer discover the crew
of "The Valley" shooting their TV show on the beach,
the two girls (along with Ryan & Seth) go to Hollywood to meet with
the cast members at a party inside a nightclub called Luna-Chicks.
They have problems with the bouncer, spot Hailey inside the club working
as a stripper, and get thrown out of the club. Meanwhile, Summer sits in
a car with one of the cast members ('Brady Bridges') and watches excerpts
from his TV show. Q. What is it actually in real life? A. For once,
what you see is what you get. These scenes were actually shot at a nightclub
in Hollywood.
Q. Where can I find it in real life? A. "Luna-Chicks" is an actual club that was called "Deep" at the time the show was filmed, located at the northwest corner of Hollywood & Vine, virtually across the street from (southwest of) the Capitol Records Building (the famous round tower which is also shown in the episode). The club is now known as "Basque", and its exact address is 1707 Vine Street, Hollywood, CA. Here is a map link. The big mural of singer Frank Sinatra (which the kids lean against during the episode) is real too, located in a north-facing alley behind the club. (Warning: I wouldn't suggest walking down back alleys in Hollywood.) (Update:
On April 30, 2008, the building housing the Basque club/restaurant was
gutted by a major fire.)
The parking lot, where Summer sits in a car with Brady Bridges and watches excerpts from "The Valley", is located just north of the club - and right across the street (west of) the Capitol Records Building. Near the end of the episode, after the kids leave the club, a close-up shows them walking over a bronze star on the sidewalk. That is part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The name on that particular star is Gloria Swanson (an actress who starred in the classic movie "Sunset Blvd"). That star is located at 6301 Hollywood Blvd, just in front of the nightclub.
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was? A. Hey, when
it comes to Hollywood, I wrote the book.
