This establishing shot of the real Orange County
was first seen on "The O.C." in Episode 3 of Season two: "The New Kids on the Block"

This is an aerial view of the Newport Fashion Island mall.
The camera is looking southwest, towards Newport Harbor.

Located about two miles northeast of Balboa island, this mall has been mentioned several times on The O.C.
You'll find it just north of Pacific Coast Highway, at the end of Newport Center Drive.

The circular pink building is the Neiman-Marcus department store. The yellowish, rectangular building behind it is
Bloomingdale's department store. You can see the part of the Four Seasons hotel on the right edge of the photo.

The Fashion Island photo below (similar to the one above), was first seen in Episode 5 (of season two) "The SnO.C.":
It was shot from just a bit farther south, and is looking due west.

This very similar shot (below) of the mall first appeared in Season two's Episode 15: "The Mallsipode",
in which we are led to believe that the mall where the kids spend the night is Fashion Island.

Important:  These "establishing shots" of Orange County are not locations where The O.C. is actually filmed.
The O.C. is not really filmed in Orange County - it is filmed in Los Angeles County. These "establishing shots"
are brief aerial snapshots of actual Orange County locations, which the producers drop into the show to add color and
to help create the illusion that we are seeing the real Orange County. I have included this list of their "establishing shots"
to supplement the main list of actual filming locations. You can tell the difference by color: the actual filming location
pages are gold, while the "establishing shot" pages are blue.
