Seeing Stars: Where the Movies Were Shot (on Location)

2012 - 2013

Filming locations of TV Shows,

The Office

In the last seconds of the final episode of "THE OFFICE" (in May 2013) the show ended
with the photo below, of '
Dunder Mifflin', the paper company where everyone worked.

The Office

That building is real.

But no, it isn't in Scranton, Pennsylvania.
It's in L.A.'s San Fernando Valley.

The building is actually part of a small studio called Chandler Valley Center Studios,
where they filmed the show. You'll find it at 13927 Saticoy Street, in Van Nuys, CA.

That's on the north side of Saticoy Street, near the west end of that street.

The building isn't open to the public, but it is (mostly) visible from the street,
as you can see in this Google StreetView.

The new ABC sitcom "THE NEIGHBORS", is about a family that finds
itself living in a neighborhood filled with aliens from another planet,
where the clueless inhabitants ride around in golf carts and have
names like 'Larry Bird' and 'Jackie Joyner-Kersee'.

Where is that quirky neighborhood in real life?

You'll find it in the North Hills section of Los Angeles
(in the northeast San Fernando Valley).

The alien family's blue home is at /font>
9220 Providence Lane, in North Hills.

And the human family's (The Weavers') brown home
is at
9218 Providence Lane, in  North Hills.

However, this is a private townhouse/condo neighborhood, behind gates,
and as such the entire development maps to 9245 Noble Ave, in North Hills.

Here's a good Google Aerial View of the houses.
And a Bing StreetSide view of a nearby street in the development.

[ Remember: these are private homes. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their doors, or do anything else that might disturb the residents. ]

 It should be noted that they filmed the very first (pilot) episode in a different neighborhood,
(and dropped some of that old footage into a few subsequent episodes, as well).

They filmed that initial episode on the 400 block of Shea Lane, in the (non-gated)
neighborhood of Bixby Village, in Long Beach, CA.  To be more precise, in that pilot,
the blue house was actually 408 Shea Lane, and the brown house was 406 Shea Lane.

Here is a Google StreetView of those two homes.

( Thanks for the letting me know, Jess. )

Go On

The short-lived 2012 NBC sitcom "Go On" starred "Friends" star, Matthew Perry.

Much of the show takes place at his group therapy meetings, and on the show,
those meetings are held at the "Lafayette Park Community Center".

And in the real world, that's more or less the truth.  Those exteriors are indeed shot at the
actual Lafayette Park in Los Angeles, but it's called the Lafayette Park Recreation Center.
  The address is 625 S. LaFayette Park Place, and the park is located off Wilshire Blvd,
just west of downtown, L.A., and four blocks northwest of MacArthur Park.

Here's is a Google StreetView of the center.
And here's an aerial view, looking south.

[Warning: the park is located in a rather rough part of town.]

~~~
Ryan's (Matthew Perry's) house on the show is obviously on the Venice canals:
The actual address is 232 Sherman Canal, in Venice, CA.
[ Remember: this is a private home. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents. ]
~~~

At the end of the very first episode, Ryan spotted a Google StreetView car,
and led the therapy group on a merry chase after it, dressed in medieval armor:

That scene was supposed to take place just outside the community center. But in fact,
it was filmed on Gordon Street, in Hollywood, just north of Santa Monica Blvd.

They are running north up Gordon Street, at around 1120 Gordon,
while the camera is looking back south.

( The palm trees you see at the south end of the street belong to the
Hollywood Forever Memorial park, final resting place to a number of stars. )

Here's a matching Google StreetView (minus the gang, of course).

Ever wonder where the "Murder House" from "AMERICAN HORROR STORY"
is really located?   It's not a studio set, and yes, it's actually in L.A.

You'll find it at 1120 Westchester Place, in central Los Angeles,
south of Hancock Park and north of the West Adams district.

[ Remember: this is a private home. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents. ]

Here's a good Google StreetView of the house.

New Girl logo

If you've seen the Fox sitcom "NEW GIRL" (with Zoey Deschanel),
you've probably noticed the unusual apartment house where
Jess and her three guy friends live.

New Girl apartment building

You'll find that brownstone building at 837 Traction Ave, in the
warehouse/arts district on the east side of downtown Los Angeles.

That's at the east/northeast corner of Traction Ave and Avery Street,
just east of Alameda, between 3rd & 4th streets - east of Little Tokyo.

Built in 1906, the building (like many in downtown) has been converted into lofts & offices.
They're called "Binford Lofts", and you can see a YouTube video tour of them here.

You can see for yourself in this Google StreetView panorama.

And you know the local bar where the "New Girl" hangs out, and where
Nick is a bartender?  The one with the green, neon griffin on top?

In real life, that exterior is an actual bar called (what else?)
The Griffin, at
3000 Los Feliz Boulevard, in the
Atwater Village section of Los Angeles.

(that's between Griffith Park and Forest Lawn Glendale).

Here is a Google StreetView of the bar, neon sign and all.

Suburgatory House

The ABC sitcom "Suburgatory" is supposed to take place in New York.

In reality, the suburban home of Tessa (and her father, George) is
actually at 10501 Kling Street, in Toluca Lake, CA.

Toluca Lake is a Los Angeles suburb, just north of Universal Studios Hollywood,
bordering both Burbank and North Hollywood.

[ Remember: this is a private home. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents. ]

You can see for yourself in this Google StreetView panorama.
