Marvel's Agents of SHIELD

The Southern California locations where Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is filmed.

Episode 12, of Season 2 ("Who You Really Are")

We first glimpse this location at 09:00, when we see a shadowy character, carrying what
looks like a small hammer, walk into a hospital and stride across its red tile floor.

He tells the girl behind the desk to take him to the supplies, to fuel.  When she doesn't
immediately comply, he grabs & threatens her, and his face begins to turn blue.
She asks what he wants, and he replies: "Don't worry, you won't remember",
as the camera focuses on that hammer-like item in his fist.

13:00: While Coulson and most of his crew are out at the pier with Lady Sif, we see
Skye & Bobbi enter (what is supposed to be) a hospital in Faro, Portugal

They go to the desk and ask the nurse about injuries from the incident at the pier.

They show her a photo of the Kree hunter on the pier, but she does not recognize him.

Just then, they spot the original desk nurse, who, like Sif, appears to have amnesia.

Bobbi phones Coulson (who's still out at the pier) and tells him she suspects that the man
they're hunting may be at the hospital.  Coulson tells her that they know that he
needs nitrogen, and that hospitals use nitrogen to power surgical equipment.

The scene cuts to a shot of a nitrogen tank, as Skye & Bobbi enter a hospital supply room
and catch the Kree hunter in the process of refilling his equipment.  His face is blue (the
usual color of Kree), but the nitrogen begins changing the color to a normal pink.

When Bobbi tries to ask him questions, he attacks her.  As they battle, Skye pulls a gun,
but just then her newfound quake power kicks in, causing a mild tremor in the room,
and dismantling her own pistol. The Kree agent uses the confusion to escape.

This "hospital" is actually the Mary Andrews Clark Memorial Residence,
located at 306 S. Loma DriveLos Angeles, about a half mile west of downtown.

It shows up a lot on TV.

Fans of TV's "Agent Carter" should recognize it as the Griffith Hotel,
the strict, girls-only boarding house where Peggy Carter lived.

Fans of the TV's Teen Wolf may recognize it as the creepy insane asylum "Echo House".

The imposing home has an interesting history.  It was built in 1913 by William Andrews Clark,
a philanthropist, to provide safe, inexpensive  housing to girls who had to work
(in a day when most women didn't work) - not unlike the Griffith Hotel.

Unlike most YWCA's, this was a rather elegant residence, closer to a private estate than
public housing. The 200 girls living there got a great bargain.  For only about $20 a week,
they got a nice room, free meals, laundry, even maid service. But they had to adhere
to the home's strict rules of behavior, which included no men allowed upstairs.

The home was shut down for a while after it was damaged by the 1987 earthquake.
It reopened in 1995 as low-income housing for both men & women.

The French Chateauesque building has been declared an Historic-Cultural Monument
and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

It's used often for filming, as well.  For instance, it was the performing arts
school attended by Hilary Duff in the 2004 movie "Raise Your Voice".

It has also been seen in "The Ring 2", "The Wedding Planner", "American Pie 2",
"I Still Know What You Did Last Summer",  and TV's "Charmed", "ER", "Party of Five",
"Providence", "The Pretender", a Macy Gray video, and  dozens of commercials.

Here is a Google StreetView of the building:
