Part 2
The
Southern California locations where
Disney's "PROM"
was filmed (in 2011).
OK, now that the movie is out on DVD, let's find out about those locations that weren't seen in the trailers!
Let's start with that Jesse's house. We don't really get to see the exterior. All we see is the street
outside of his place, where Jesse is pushing his younger brother (on the sidewalk) on his motorcycle.
This scene was shot with the camera looking west up Greenmeadow Road,
from the southwest corner of Greenmeadow & Maybank Ave, in Lakewood, CA. Jesse is walking east, along the south side of Greenmeadow Road,
past the north side of an apartment building at 4141 Maybank Ave.
( While I could be wrong, I don't believe the interior scene,
with his mother, was shot inside those same apartments. )
This location is about two miles west of Lakewood High.
[ Warning: These is private apartments. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents! ]
(Here
is a Google
StreetView panorama of the same sidewalk.)
[ Thanks goes to Susan Loomis, who saw them filming at this
location and sent me a photo of it, back in June of 2011. ]
If you want to know what the apartment complex itself looks like, here's a photo of it
from a real estate site: (You can see the same trees & sidewalk on the right side.)
Next, we move on to that party house, scene of Tyler's backyard BBQ party, where Lucas takes Simone:
The address is 4030 Country Club Drive, in Long Beach, CA.
This house is located in a neighborhood that might look familiar. It's the Country Club Drive section of
Long Beach, and Hollywood has filmed here often, from "American Pie" to "Ferris Bueller" to "Dexter".
Producers love the large, stately homes on Country Club (and its surrounding streets), and the fact
that the neighborhood has more of an East Coast feel to it, with few palm trees that scream "L.A."
( In the
screencap above, the camera is looking east. )
[ Warning: This is a private home. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents! ]
(Here
is a Google
StreetView panorama of the house.)
And how about that diner / malt shop where Jesse & Nova stopped for a shake, where Jesse's mother
worked behind the counter, and where he almost got into fight with a group of jerks?
That scene was shot at Le Roy's, an old-fashioned, neighborhood coffee shop
located at 523 W. Huntington Drive, in Monrovia, CA.
I'm not sure if they really serve shakes, but they're known for their breakfasts.
In fact, as I understand it, they're open only for breakfast and lunch.
Take a close look at the mom's shirt in the screencap below, and you'll see the Le Roy's logo.
(That same lion logo is up on the Le Roy's sign, as you can see here.)
We see the restaurant's exterior when Nova talks him out of the fight, and gets him outside.
And we see it again after dark, when Jesse gets mad and comes back to finish the scuffle.
So, where the heck is Monrovia? It's about 15 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles.
If you've ever been to the Santa Anita race track, or to the Los Angeles County Arboretum,
just go east about a mile on Huntington Drive, and you'll find Le Roy's on the
north side of the street, two blocks east of the Foothill (210) Freeway.
(Here
is a Google
StreetView panorama of the restaurant.)
OK, Next, what about Simone's house?
This is where Tyler comes to her house and, in an attempt to make up with her, leaves
two stones outside her door: one tiny, one huge, along with an invitation to the prom.
The invitation tells Simone to bring the answer to him. Painted on the small stone
is the word "Yes", and printed on the huge, heavy stone, is the word "No".
It works, and she agrees to go with him to the prom.
Later, poor Lucas, who has a hopeless crush on Simone, listens to Lloyd's advice,
and makes a last ditch attempt to stop her from going to the prom with Tyler.
He winds up in a big tree, outside her second-floor window, declaring his love for her.
It doesn't work. She tells him she's still going to the prom with Tyler.
This house was hard to find. You never see the full house in the movie, just
the red front door, the brick walkway, and the upper window.
I assumed it was probably on or near Country Club Drive, near where they had shot the
party house scenes. So I spent a long time searching for it there, without success.
Turns out I was almost right. But not quite.
Susan Loomis, who lives in the area, spotted them filming about eight blocks to the east,
near Olive & Claiborne, and let me know. So I took a look, and sure enough,
it was Simone's house - big tree and all. (Thanks, Susan!)
The address of Simone's house is 805 E. Claiborne, in Long Beach, CA.
That's at the northeast corner of Claiborne & Olive, one block east of Atlantic Ave.
Here is a Google StreetView of the house.
[ Warning: This is a private home. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents! ]
OK, here's a location that WAS in the trailer, but I had no idea where it was shot, until I saw the movie.
It's the dress shop where Nova tries on prom dresses, with Jesse giving her feedback
about each dress, until she finally finds the perfect gold number.
Since it was an interior shot, I honestly didn't think I'd ever find it. For all I knew,
it might have just been shot on a set inside a studio. But it wasn't.
Those
key prom dress scenes were filmed inside the Alfred Angelo Bridal Shop,
at 280 S. State College Blvd, in Brea, CA, just outside the Brea Mall.
(That's about 8 miles north of Angels Stadium.)
How did I find it? Well, there were Alfred Angelo signs everywhere in the scene,
but that didn't help much, because they had 15 shops in Southern California alone.
(They were mainly a bridal gown shop, but also sold prom dresses.)
It wasn't until I saw another scene: the one where Rolo tries on his tuxedo, that
I finally got a clue I could work with. It occurred to me that they might have used
the same store for both scenes. There was a Friar Tux Shop sign on the wall of the
Rolo scene, so I checked, and sure enough, Alfred Angelo and Friar Tux share
space in many of the same stores. It was definitely the same place.
Better yet, that tux scene gave me a look out the shop's windows (see the screencap
below), where I could see several large, decorative rocks on a lawn, plus
a low wrought-iron fence, trees, and part of a parking lot.
That set me on a hunt, using aerial photos and Google StreetViews, to look at each store
in SoCal, until I finally spotted those rocks outside the Alfred Angelo store in Brea.
Here's what I found: a Google StreetView of the Brea store.
See the rocks? And the fence?
[ Alas, the Alfred Angelo chain of stores went out of business
in 2017, six years after "Prom" was released. This Brea location was
replaced in by a similar bridal/prom dress shop called
"Dream on Bridal Outlet". ]
Next, we come to the scenes where Nova joins Jesse on his motorcycle,
as they head out to spy on the rival school's prom decorations.
The scene above, as they are heading to the rival school, was shot in the San Fernando Valley.
They are headed west on Nordhoff Street, passing 17536 Nordhoff St, in Northridge, CA.
(That's between White Oak Ave and Encino Ave.)
(That's just a couple of blocks from Holmes Middle School - where they shot
the outdoor school scenes on the athletic field, including the shed burning.)
Here
is a Google
StreetView panorama of the same stretch of road.
But when they are coming back from their caper, on the same motorcycle (below), and get
pulled over by the cops, the scene switches to another street, some 50 miles away.
In this scene, they are heading east on the 6100 block of Carson Street, in Long Beach, CA.
(That's between Woodruff Ave. & Palo Verde Ave (as the cop pulls behind them), next to Heartwell Park.
See that red sign behind them, on the right side of the street?
That's a Smart & Final store, at 5925 Carson Street.
It's about 5 miles east of the party house, and less than a mile from
Lakewood High School, where the filmed the scenes of Nova & Jesse being chased through the halls by the janitor.
(Here
is a Google
StreetView panorama of the same street.)
After the cops catch them, Jesse & Nova sit on a curb and wait for her Dad to arrive.
(Suffice it to say, he is not a happy man, as he pulls up in his pickup truck to get his daughter.)
This scene was shot very near Holmes Middle School, in Northridge, but just a little south of it.
Right next door to (south of) Holmes Middle School is Dearborn Elementary School.
And right next door to the Elementary School is Dearborn Park.
They shot this scene on the street that runs in between the school and the park.
Not surprisingly, it's called Dearborn Street.
In the screencap above, we see the kids sitting on the curb on the south side
of Dearborn Street, just west of Amestoy Ave, with the park behind them.
When her Dad arrives, heading west in his truck, he parks on the north side
of Dearborn Street, with the school's fence seen behind him.
(Here is a matching
Google StreetView panorama.)
Another house seen in the movie is Justin's house, where his girlfriend, Mei,
comes to talk to him on the night of the prom.
They sit on the front porch, and she confesses that the reason she has been acting distant lately
is that she has been accepted into Parson's School for Design - which is in New York.
This location was another one that was hard to find, since only the front door and the porch is shown.
Fortunately, Susan Loomis again happened upon the filming in her neighborhood, and let me know.
The address of Justin's house is 3934 Pacific Ave, in Long Beach, CA.
(That's three blocks west of the party house on Country Club Drive.)
Here is a Google StreetView of the house.
[ Warning: This is a private home. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their door, or do anything else that might disturb the residents! ]

Here's the scene where friends Lucas and Corey come out of the Stick Hippo concert, on the
night of the prom, only to find Simone (wearing her prom dress) waiting for Lucas in the parking lot.
That theatre door is no theatre door. In reality, it's a door on the north side of the Gallery Expo,
at 4321 Atlantic Ave, in Long Beach, CA., that leads out to a small parking lot. It's on the
west side of Atlantic, across the street from the Alsace Lorraine bakery (seen above).
(Here
is a Google
StreetView panorama of the door and the parking lot - looking southwest.)
Below, the camera is looking northwest at Simone waits in a nearby parking lot / alleyway.
Finally, here's a funny, quick shot of Rolo in his tux, riding his bicycle to the prom.
This scene was shot at the corner of Country Club Drive & San Antonio Drive, in Long Beach.
The camera is looking south/southeast, as Rolo pedals north on Country Club Drive,
eating (what else?) a roll of Rolos. (How's that for product placement?)
