that chase scene near the start was That scene was actually shot on Shoreline Drive, in Long Beach, CA. Here is a matching Google StreetView. The scene above is looking east from
around 700 W. Shoreline Drive. The overpass is the If you look closely at that scene, you can
actually spot the roller coaster-shaped bridge
In the 2009 Jeremy Piven comedy, "THE GOODS: LIVE HARD, SELL HARD", the used car lot, where most of the action was filmed, is located at 3001 W. Main Street, in Alhambra, CA. (The northwest side faces Huntington Drive.) That's about six miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, and south of Pasadena. The center used to belong to a BMW dealership,
but they moved to a new address in Alhambra, leaving the facilities empty
for the filming crew to move in and take over to shoot the movie. In the 2009 "STAR TREK" movie, the Star Fleet Academy may look familiar to students at a certain University in the Valley... The scene above (where a giant drill from space prepares to destroy earth) was shot at Cal-State University Northridge (CSUN), at 18111 Nordhoff Street, in Northridge, CA. The building seen above is really Oviatt Library, which is located at near the center of the CSUN campus. Do note, however, that the scene has been heavily doctored via CGI. The library has been given a second floor, and the blue ocean has been added, along with the San Francisco skyline. (Normally, those steps on the right would lead up to another campus building, not the Pacific.) But otherwise, the library is quite recognizable, as are the stairs outside and the diagonal paths across the green. ( One interesting coincidence is that
the very same building was used in the 2005 sci-fi comedy "Sky High",
in which it played a similar role: that of a futuristic school for superheroes.
Only in "Sky High", the building "floated". )
And if you think that's surprising, wait until you find out where they shot the scenes where Kirk & Sulu skydive down onto a floating space drill, then do battle with renege Romulans atop the drill in an effort to save the planet Vulcan. They filmed those scenes in the parking lot of Dodger Stadium. The producers were looking for a spot in L.A. with a lot of room and a clear horizon, so they ended up erecting giant green screens in the Dodger Stadium parking lot and building the sets there. You can find Dodger Stadium just northwest of downtown
L.A., at 1000 Elysian Park Ave, Los
Angeles.
It was filmed in the SkyRose Chapel at Rose Hills Memorial Park, a cemetery located at 3888 Workman Mill Road, in Whittier, CA. You'll find it just east of
the 605 Freeway (via the Rose Hills Road exit), about 15 miles east of downtown
Los Angeles.
