Dexter Filming Locations: The Wendell Owens Murder Scene

The location: Wendell Owens' House.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. The home of Wendell Owens and his mother.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. Twice in Season 3.

First, in Episode 5 - "Turning Biminese", where Debra tracks young Wendell Owens down to his home. She finds him outside the house, smoking a cigarette.  After he initially refuses to talk, she reminds him that she bought him some fast food, and the kid relents and tells her that Freebo owed somebody for a lot of money - and was probably running scared. During this time, someone (the killer) is watching them both through binoculars.

Wendell was a 15-year-old boy who had been working as Freebo's watch-out and doorman. He's the kid that met Dexter outside of Freebo's house when Dexter first visited the drug dealer.

We see the house again in Episode 7, "Easy As Pie", in which Wendell's grieving mother comes out and confronts Debra (who is there with Quinn this time), after Wendell has been murdered.
The mother has found the business card that Deb gave to the boy - they were in the shorts he got killed in. The angry mother pushes Debra and shouts that she is to blame for her son's death.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A residential home - but nowhere near Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. It's at 6062 Harold Way, in Hollywood, CA.

That's on the south side of the street, two houses west of La Baig Ave, and just a block north of the Sunset-Gower studio (where Dexter is filmed).

The producers littered the yard with trash cans and a shopping cart to make the area look tackier than it really is.

It's also right around the corner from another location, the motel seen in Episode 5, where Angel talked to Detective Barbara Gianna while she was working vice.

It's a few blocks northwest of Ramon Prado's house.

And it's less than half a mile from the tailor shop where Dexter was grabbed by the Skinner.

(I shot the photos below in 2009)

[ Warning: This is a private home.  Do not trespass on their property, knock on their door,
or do anything else that might disturb the residents.

A bit of trivia: what appears to be that same Toyota truck (seen above), can be glimpsed on the show, in Episode 7.
It's seen in the background of the scene where Debra bends down to pick up her business card, thrown there by Wendell's mother.

Here is an aerial photo of the house. And here is a map link of the location.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. This took some looking...  At first, I assumed that the small, lime-colored house would be in San Pedro, near Freebo's house, considering that Wendell worked for Freebo and both homes were modest ones. But I could see that the street numbers on the block were in the 6000 block, and there are no 6000's in San Pedro.

So I moved on to upper Long Beach, where there are 6000's, but didn't find it there.

Later, I discovered that they had been doing quite a lot of filming in Hollywood itself, near the Sunset-Gower studio where Dexter is filmed. I began searching for hard-to-find locations in that area, and came up with several. And sure enough, when I checked the 6000 block near the studio, there is was, just around the corner from that motel where Angel talked to Barbara.
