Dexter Filming Locations: Warehouse Jumping Scene

The location: Trinity's Forced Jumper.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A warehouse.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. At the Miami docks.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 3 (of season 4),"Blinded By The Light".

We see Trinity arrive at a warehouse, after dark, with a frightened woman driving the car. He has obviously taken her captive. She pleads with him not to hurt her.

He uses a straight razor to cut the bonds tying her wrists, then makes her get out of the car and leads her into the warehouse.

We next see them standing on the top floor of that warehouse, looking out one of the large loading windows/doors at the harbor lights below. It's a long way down.

He then tells her that it's time to jump.

She is shocked. He maneuvers her into position, with her back to the door, her hands holding onto a rail, which is the only thing preventing her from toppling backward to her death.

He tells her to let go. She doesn't. She begs for mercy and says she has children.  He says he knows, and that if she refuses he will go to her house and kill them and her husband.

Realizing the threat to her family, and the helplessness of her situation, she reluctantly lets go of the rail, and falls backward out of the opening, plunging six stories to the ground below.

We next see the warehouse hours later, in the daytime.  The police are on the scene.

Dexter is shooting photos of the dead woman's body, which lies on the ground below the window, while Masuka examines the body and discusses the cause of death: "gravity."

Debra and Quinn watch from the sidelines, until Agent Lundy arrives on the scene.

He tells them it was probably the handiwork of the Trinity Killer, and says that if it was, she would turn out to be a mother of two. He also says he'd be curious to know if there was a similar death here 30 years ago.

We see the same warehouse later in the episode, as Masuka throws dummies out the top floor window (to test how a body would fall), while Lundy & Dexter stand below and watch.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A dockside warehouse- but far from Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This scene was shot at the historic Warehouse #1, at the far south end of Signal Street, in San Pedro, CA.

That's just a short drive south of Ports O'Call Village, and east of the Cabrillo Marina.

It appears they shot the east side of the warehouse, near its north end. You can see the blue lights of the Vincent Thomas Bridge glowing in the shot where Trinity and the woman are standing in the doorway looking out over the harbor (see the second photo down from the top of this page).

For some reason, when the producers see this warehouse, they must think of jumping. In the first season, they used this same warehouse as the scene where young Dexter stood on the edge, until his father (thinking he planned to jump) pulled him away from the edge.

It's also just east across the channel from the spot where they filmed the railroad car scenes in Season Two.

I shot the photos below in November 2009.

Here is an aerial photo of the school. And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  I had identified this warehouse earlier for the young Dexter jumping scene.
Those jutting balconies/stairwells are easy to spot, so I simply recognized it this time when I saw it on the show.

Then I went there in person to make sure, and to shoot the photos you see above.
