Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
A. At 1028 Vanderan Street, in Miami.
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode 5, of Season 6, "The Angel of Death".
In a brief scene, we see Travis lock his door, walk down stairs, and get into his car.
Dexter, who
has been waiting for him to leave, picks the lock on his door, and searches his
apartment, looking for evidence to link him to the Doomsday murders.
He finds a
large bible, with page numbers resembling the numbers found on the
bodies of the murder victims. Looking closer, he sees that some of
the page numbers have been cut out.
So he takes
one of the pages with him, back to his lab - and sure enough, the small
hole in the page perfectly matches the small numbered piece of paper
found on a victim. Dexter is now convinced that Travis is guilty.
He later
grabs Travis (after lying in wait in his back seat). But after learning
that he hasn't actually killed anyone (Gellar did), he lets him go.
We see the
apartment one more time in the same episode. Dexter is again
parked outside, this time waiting for Travis to inadvertently lead him
to Gellar. Travis comes out to his car, and nervously checks the
back seat before getting in.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. This location, like many others in the Dexter universe, is located on Gordon Street, right across from the Sunset-Gower Studio, where Dexter is filmed.
The address is 1430 Gordon Street, in Hollywood, CA.

It's literally right next door to another apartment house that was used in the first season as Doakes' apartment. And which was later used as the Nanny's place.
Other homes on Gordon Street include Lisa's house, Nick's house, Boyd Fowler's House, Anton's apartment, Teegan's
house, Matt Chambers' house, Christine's apartment house, and the Skinner's assistant's house.
And it's also near Lumen's motel, the First Date
Cafe, Wendell Owens' house, the street where Trinity walked the
dog, and the strip mall where Debra picks
up the photos for the funeral.
It's just a stone's throw from the corner where Dexter drops off Travis after setting him free, in this same episode.
Rick shot the photos below (in the rain) in November 2011.

Note the same stairs (below), with the white wrought iron, where Travis parked.

And this is the door Travis exited (and Dexter entered), at the top of the stairs.

[Warning: These are private apartments. Do not trespass on their property,
knock on their doors, or do anything that might disturb the residents.]
Here is an aerial
photo of the apartment house. Here is a Google StreetView. And here is a map

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. In previous seasons, I've
usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes,
using clues from the various scenes. By the 6th season, though,
I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an
eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know
in advance when something was about to film there.
Between those reports, my own personal reconnaissance around town, and a
few new resources I discovered, by the time the first episode aired, I
already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only
needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct
locations.
This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Ellen, Susan, Jason, Elaine, Joel, Julie, Geoff, Jeff, Jen, and others. My thanks to all of them.
Rick let me know about this one, and he even braved a rare (early-November) L.A. rainstorm to get the photos you see above. (Good going, Rick!)
