Q.
Where is it supposed to be on the show?
Q.
When did we see it on the show?
A. In Episode
8, of Season 5, "Take It!".
This was actually
the location of several different scenes:
- First, we see
Dexter in the audience of the actual "Take It!" seminar, with
Jordan Chase speaking on stage and the crowd roaring - as Dexter thinks
to himself that he has never been surrounded by so many people who make
him feel normal.
- Then we see
an outdoor patio area, where Dexter phones Lumen during a break, while
other seminar attendees browse Jordan Chase merchandise.
- Dexter is then
called to Jordan Chase's posh hotel suite, where Dexter is surprised to
find that Chase knows a lot about him.
- Next, we see
the Dexter & Lumen's hotel room, which Dexter has rented right
next to their target: Chase's security chief, Cole Harmon, one of
Lumen's attackers.
- Later, we see
various hotel hallways, and the hotel lobby, where Lumen watches Dexter
on stage with Chase on a TV monitor, and where she is spotted by Cole
Harmon.
- Finally, after
they have killed Cole, we see the main hotel entrance, the valet station,
when Dexter is leaving with his luggage (containing Cole Harmon's body
parts). Dexter is approached by Jordan Chase, who inadvertently reveals
that he was one of Lumen's attackers.
Q.
What is it actually in real life?
Q.
Where can I find it in real life?
A. All of these
scenes were shot at the Ritz-Carlton Marina Del Rey Hotel,
a luxury hotel, found at 4375 Admiralty Way,
in Marina del Rey,
California.
- The "Take
It!" seminar itself was shot inside the Ritz-Carlton's Ballroom.
- The outdoor
scene of Dexter phoning Lumen was shot outside the back (south side) of
the hotel, on a walkway overlooking the marina.
- Jordan Chase's
executive suite was actually the Ritz-Carlton Suite, at the same hotel.
- Dexter & Lumen's
room (as well as Cole's) is a standard room at the Ritz.
- The various
hallway and lobby shots were also filmed at the Ritz.
- And the scene
of Dexter talking to Chase at the valet station was filmed out front, at
the hotel's main entrance.
The hotel is on
the north side of the marina, about a mile from Fisherman's Village,
where they filmed (for the same episode) the scenes of Lumen
meeting her ex-fiance Owen at a cafe, of Liddy
shooting photos of Dexter & Lumen, and of Liddy staging
an accident with Lumen.
The hotel has
its own website at ritzcarlton.com.

Here is an aerial
photo of the hotel. And here is a map

Elsewhere in
Marina del Rey, they filmed the scene of Dexter
in the park with baby Harrison (from this season), the wedding
of Dexter & Rita (from the 4th season), and the shopping
trip with Miguel Prado (from the 3rd Season).
It's also right
across the channel from the hotel where Lundy & Debra
were shot (in the 4th season), and the bloody
hotel (from the 1st season). In fact, I shot the photo below from that
hotel's parking lot.
Q.
How the heck did you figure out where it was?
A. I first
found out that they were shooting at the Ritz through a tip from Rick.
That was easily
confirmed when I saw the establishing shot here:
which,
as you can see, matches this photo I shot of the hotel in November 2010:
So, then it was
on to the individual scenes, to try to match them up to places at the hotel.
The easiest
was that outdoor scene where Dexter phones Lumen. The buildings & slips
seen in the background were easily matched using Bing's Birds-Eye View
photos.
Next was the
actual seminar. At first, all that blue fooled me, and I assumed that the
seminar was probably just filmed on a studio set.
But then I spotted
a glimpse of the hotel's unusual carpet, and looking harder, I was able
to find one freeze-frame that revealed the room's unusual ceiling, and
the heavy casing around the door. Tinkering with the screencap's contrast
a bit in PhotoShop, I was also able to bring out the chandeliers on the
ceiling - all of which matched this photo of the hotel's ballroom:
That same somewhat
eccentric carpeting made it easy to identify the hotel in the various hallway
and lobby scenes.
I suspected that
Jordan Chase's luxury suite was probably an actual suite at the Ritz, so
I checked their website for photos...
and
sure enough, I found this perfectly matching photo of the Ritz-Carlton
Suite:
And the hotel's
entrance / valet station
clearly
matches this photo from the site:
