Dexter Filming Locations: The Road to the Everglades

The location: The Road to the Everglades.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A deserted stretch of road leading to the Everglades.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere between Miami & the Everglades.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 10 (of Season 2), "There's Something About Harry".

Dexter is seen driving in his minivan down a deserted stretch of road, heading towards his cabin in the Everglades, when he gets a text message on his cell phone.

The call is from Christopher Harlow, a drug dealer & killer who is trying to reach Jimenez, the man who owned the cabin in the Everglades (and the man who killed Dexter's mother).

The text message says that Harlow has found out where Jimenez's cabin is, and he wants his cocaine.

Dexter has already killed Jimenez, and has Doakes imprisoned at the cabin, so he can't afford to have the Harlow snooping around.

So Dexter, hoping to head things off, pulls over to the side of the road and sends a text reply, telling Harlow to meet him behind Jimenez's bar - alone. Dexter plans to kill him, and use his death to frame Doakes.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A deserted stretch of road (by L.A. standards) - but nowhere near Florida.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This scene was shot while heading northeast on Culver Blvd in Playa Del Rey (southwest of Marina Del Rey), on a lonely stretch of road just past (northeast of) the spot where Jefferson Blvd forks off from Culver Blvd, south of Ballona Creek.

The camera was kept low to the ground, to avoid showing much of the surroundings, just the road.

From Marina Del Rey, take Lincoln Blvd south to Jefferson, turn right (west) on Jefferson until you reach Culver Blvd. Stop at a stop sign there, then turn right (northwest) on Culver, and that's the "road to the Everglades".

I shot the photos below in Nov. 2008

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. There wasn't that much to go on here, just telephone poles, brush, palms, wood fences, etc.

But in the far distance, you can see tall buildings (note the second photo from the top), and they appeared to be those of Marina Del Rey.

So, based on the slant of the buildings, the area around Jefferson & Culver made sense.  The real trick was proving it.

Fortunately, as Dexter is driving, you can see a particular series of objects pass by his window: twin palm trees, telephone poles, a bush, another group of palms, then a triangular-shaped traffic sign, all in predictable order. So I switched to aerial photos on Live Local and was able to identify that exact sequence of objects (from southwest to northeast) on this stretch of Culver Blvd.

Then I went there in person to check it out and shoot photos.
