Dexter Filming Locations: Richochet Rabbit

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: The Ricochet Rabbit
(Docked under the bridge)

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A yacht, named Ricochet Rabbit.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Two locations: first, docked at a marina in Coral Gables, Florida. Second, docked near a bridge at 114 Bleaker Canal Road.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 10, of Season 6, "Ricochet Rabbit".

It appears several times in the episode, at three separate locations.

Holly Benson, the woman that Travis abducted and later released, is hiding out, afraid that Travis & Gellar might threaten her again.

And she's right to be afraid.  Crazy Travis has changed his mind, and has decided to finish the job of killing "The Whore of Babylon".

In the first scenes, we see Holly Benson arrive at her boyfriend's yacht, the Ricochet Rabbit. , which is docked at a marina.

There, she is surprised on board by Travis.  She tries to run away, but is cornered by Steve & Beth Dorsey, Travis's new disciples.

Later, we see Travis sail the boat out of that marina.

In the second scenes, we see the Ricochet Rabbit docked under a bridge, at night. We also see Travis murder Holly (with the help of Steve).

The next day, with the boat in the same spot by the bridge, we see Travis brewing up his poison gas (that he refers to as "Wormwood"), and showing it off to the Dorseys.

Finally, we see Dexter find the boat and board it.

He gets into a struggle with a man he assumes is Travis, but whose face is concealed by a gas mask and HazMat suit.  Dexter kills him, but then discovers it's Travis's disciple, Steve Dorsey.

Dexter also finds Holly's body hanging off the ship's anchor.

Dexter then gets into an argument with Harry about whether to call the police.  Dexter doesn't want to; he wants to kill Travis personally.

But after he finds chemicals used to make deadly poison gas, Dexter relents and phones 911, telling them the location of the yacht, and warning them about the poison gas.

In the next episode 11 ("Talk to the Hand"), we see the police (including Dexter) arrive on the scene, and find the evidence of poison gas manufacturing, as well as the dead bodies of Steve Dorsey and Holly Benson.  Debra decides to notify Homeland Security.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A yacht.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. The Ricochet Rabbit is actually the Victoria, a yacht usually docked near Alamitos Landing, in Long Beach, CA.
They rented it for this shoot, to play the role of Peter's Grant's boat.

But for these scenes, it they sailed the Victoria to two different locations:

  • The first set of scenes are of Holly arriving at the yacht, of her being caught and killed by Travis, and of Travis pulling the boat out of the marina.

(To read about that first marina location,

  • The second scenes are after Travis has sailed the ship to another area, under a bridge (near a supposedly secluded canal) - where he kills Holly, and later, where he shows his disciples Wormwood. Also shot at the same location are the scenes when Dexter arrives, kills Steve Dorsey, finds Holly's body on the anchor, and argues with Harry.

Those scenes were filmed with the Victoria positioned just south of (the west end of) the Queensway Bridge, about a quarter mile southwest of the original marina location.

The Queensway bridge spans the final (south) end of the Los Angeles River - as it reaches the ocean in Long Beach, a channel which separates the Long Beach mainland from a man-made spur of land which contains mostly industrial port/pier properties, but which is also home to the Queen Mary ocean liner - which is where the bridge got its present name.

This location of the boat is just south of the bridge,
on the west side of the channel, between the bridge and the Maya Hotel (where they filmed a restaurant scene back in the second season, as well as a Debra/Lundy scene in the same season).

In the scene, the bow of the boat pointed southeast.

Look in the background during the scene, and you can see the white lighthouse in Shoreline Park, as well as the very recognizable Parker's Lighthouse restaurant (both located east of the launch ramp, across the channel). Plus several downtown buildings, including the World Trade Center and one of the Long Beach oil islands.

But something is fishy here.  There is no real dock here (not unless they built one since my last recent visit).  It appears that they faked the dock, most likely so they could position the ship in that picturesque spot next to the bridge.

But I'm not sure exactly how.  They might have built a fake dock.  They might have inserted a dock via CGI, with the boat floating offshore.  They might have CGI'd the entire Victoria into the bridge scene, and perhaps used some other boat for the inside scenes.  Hard to tell for sure.  All I can be sure of is that the cameras are just south of the bridge, on the west side of the channel, close to the Maya Hotel.

I shot the photo below back in 2008.

The camera is looking north, towards the Queensway Bridge.
(The Ricochet Rabbit was docked approximately where the red boat is in this photo.).

Here is an aerial map showing both locations where they docked the yacht.  And here is a map link.

Here's a Google StreetView of the Victoria in its usual dock, near Alamitos Landing, in Long Beach.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. I'm very familiar with the area around the Queensway Bridge.  I've been there on several photo shoots, in the areas around both ends of the bridge.  So the second location was determined by simply looking at the shots of the boat in relation to its surroundings.

It is clearly docked south of the Queensway Bridge, and by triangulating several buildings seen in the background (such as the World Trade Center and the Catalina Cruise terminal), it appears to have been shot somewhere between the bridge and the Maya Hotel.  But since there doesn't seem to be a real dock there, it means that they must have faked the dock.
