The
location: The Old Lady Across the Street. |
Q.
What is it supposed to be on the show?
A. A residential
home.
Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show? A. In a modest residential neighborhood, in Dade City, Florida.
Q. When did we see it on the show? A. In Episode 9 (Season 1), "Father Knows Best". When Dexter goes to investigate a Dade City house that he unexpectedly inherits from his unknown (biological) father, he briefly meets the lonely old woman who lives across the street (played by Jeanette Miller). She asks if they are the new owners, and Dexter tells her they are just there for a brief visit. She says that the former owner used to clean out her rain gutters, and hopefully asks if Dexter might do the same. Later, when Dexter begins to suspect that his biological father's death might be foul play, he visits the old lady and asks her if she had seen anyone around on the day his father died. She tells him she only saw the cable man (who she asked to help fix her TV antenna). As they are leaving, she spots someone and yells after him "Cable man!" We
later see the person, dressed as a cable man, show up at the old lady's
door.
Q. What is it actually in real life? A. An actual
house, but not in Dade City.
Q. Where can I find it in real life? A. As you might
expect, the house is located right across the street (north of) of Dexter's
inherited house. You'll find it at 5561 E. Rolanda Street, in Long Beach, California. It's on the north side of Rolanda Street, near the middle of that short block. Rolanda is an east/west street, just south of the north-west streets containing the other "Dexter" homes - all of which are located just south of the San Diego (405) Freeway near the Bellflower exit. I shot the photo below in Dec. 2007 [
Warning: This is a private home. Do not
knock on their door, trespass on their property, It's actually
located just a couple of blocks away from some other "Dexter"
homes in the 'Los Altos' neighborhood of Long Beach: Rita's
house, Dexter's childhood
home & Angel's house. It's also close to the intersection where the "Ice Truck Killer" stopped his car to check on his captive (Debra) in the car trunk. Here is an aerial photo of the houses. And here is a map link.
Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was? A. The house
number (5561) was right on the front of the old lady's house in the TV
scenes, and I already knew the location of Dexter's inherited house, which
was right across the street, so all that was needed was a visit to shoot
the photo.
