Dexter Filming Locations: Dexter Abducted by Liddy

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: Dexter Abducted by Liddy

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A parking lot.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. On a street near Dexter's apartment, in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 11, of Season 5, "Hop a Freighter".

Dexter has found out that someone is spying on him (via a hidden camera in his apartment), so he has been keeping an eye on vans parked in his neighborhood, trying to identify the spy's base.

He finally narrows it down to a single possibility: a white van parked in a small lot a block from his apartment.

With gloves on and a hypodermic needle between his teeth, Dexter leaves his car and heads for the white van.

He opens the van door, expecting to find Quinn inside, but is literally shocked when Stan Liddy surprises him from behind, tasers him, throws him in the back of the van, and drives away.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A parking lot.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This parking lot is located behind (east of) the L.A. Fitness gym in the Los Altos Center, in Long Beach, CA.

The official address is 2180 N. Bellflower Blvd., but the lot is actually at the southwest corner of Stearns Street & Marwick Ave, in Long Beach.

To be more precise, Marwick actually ends at Stearns, and the parking lot is on the other (south) side of Stearns - where Marwick ends.

Dexter's car is parked on the east side of Marwick, just north of Stearns. So when Dexter leaves his car and heads for the van, he is walking south across Stearns, to the lot.

Liddy's van was parked just inside the small lot, facing east.

When Liddy drives off, with Dexter in the back, he heads east up Stearns. (See this page for more details about his driving route.)

Liddy eventually parks the van at the old fuel dock at Bayfront Park, where he attempts to force a confession out of Dexter. (That proves to be a fatal decision...)

I shot the photos below in December 2010:

The shot below is looking south down Marwick Avenue, across Stearns Street, into Liddy's parking lot.
    (The red
X marks where Liddy's van was parked.)

The shot below was taken from inside Liddy's lot, looking north,
across Stearns Street, to where Dexter's car was parked.

Here is an aerial photo of the area, with the parking places marked. And here is a map link.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  A lot of different people helped out on this one.

I learned that they were filming somewhere around Bellflower & Stearns, so I headed out there early in the morning to check it out. I found them base-camped in the Los Altos center there, and when I turned down Stearns, I found Marwick and San Anseline Avenues blocked off, with very heavy security. Unfortunately, I couldn't stick around.

So I let a few of my Dexter tipsters know about the filming, and got back some very interesting reports from the filming scene throughout the day:

Julie happened to have a hair appointment at that center that afternoon, and promised to let me know what she saw. She got back to me later to say that it looked like they were filming behind the shopping center on Bellflower & Stearns, near the Trader Joe's, as well as on San Anseline, but that everything was blocked off, so she couldn't get close enough to see what was really going on.

Kerry reported that they had San Anseline blocked off at Stearns and San Anseline, and that there were tons of LB cops. She said that they seemed to have a very large base came set up behind LA Fitness, and at least two cops directing traffic.

Jeff wrote to say that "they just shot a scene with Dex getting out of his car to go across the street to stick the needle....putting his gloves on..."  He then sent me this cell phone photo of Michael C. Hall sitting in Dexter's car on Marwick:

That was followed by a more detailed report from Jeff: "Dex gets out of his car...and crosses Stearns... There is a white van parked across the street behind LA Fitness.... Dex has syringe ready, and as he opens the door to get the bad guy, the bad guy sneaks behind Dex and tasers him...throws him in the van...and drives off."

Now that was a shocker to read! Another photo from Jeff followed, this one of Dex crossing the street:

Soon after, Ellen reported in with more details: "We saw Dexter approach a large white van wearing gloves and carrying a hypodermic. A man in a Hawaiian shirt and blue blazer zaps Dexter and throws him into the side door of the van. The van was parked just inside the parking lot off of Stearns, under pine trees (Miami?)"

Kerry reported again: "I could see them filming into the back of a white panel van in the parking lot near the back of the LA Fitness. It was very close to Stearns - maybe two or three parking spaces into the lot. There seemed to be an awful lot of equipment and people for what didn't seem like a lot of shooting. Maybe there is more later."

Ellen chimed in that: "Now they were filming across the street. Dexter and Julia Stiles stand on the corner of Stearns & Marwick holding hands and talking." She also mentioned that three fans showed up wearing matching Dexter "kill" shirts (brown thermal henleys) and got a wave and acknowledgment from Michael C Hall. Then she sent me this wonderful photo of Dexter and Lumen together:

(As it turned out, though, Ellen's MINI Cooper wound up on the show, glimpsed behind Lumen in this shot.
    )

So, a ton of thanks to everyone who helped out on this big scene: Jeff, Ellen, Kerry, Julie... Great goin' troops!
