Dexter Filming Locations: The Kids School

The location: The Kids' School.

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Bayside Elementary school.

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Somewhere in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. Only once, in a very brief scene in the third season finale, Episode 12 - "Do You Take Dexter Morgan?"

In the scene, we see Dexter pick up Rita's two kids (Cody & Astor) at the school.

As he pulls away from the curb, we see that he is being followed by a dark-colored car.  But Dexter is still thinking about Ramon Prado (whom he has been trying to find), so at first, he doesn't notice the tail.

But he soon notices it, and takes evasive actions, leading to a traffic accident.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A primary school.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. Over the years, the Dexter producers have used several different schools for Bayside Elementary, including one in Long Beach.

This one, in real life, is the Hollywood Primary Center, at 1115 Tamarind Ave., in Hollywood, a public school that serves students in grades from kindergarten to the 2nd grade.

It's on the west side of Tamarind, just north of Santa Monica Blvd, and south of the Sunset-Gower Studio where Dexter is filmed.

It's not far from several other Dexter locations: the home of Wendell Owens.
, the hooker motel, Ramon Prado's house, and the tailor shop where Dexter was grabbed by the Skinner.

(I shot the photo below in 2009)

The shot above is looking west/northwest.

Here is an aerial photo of the motel. And here is a map link of the location.

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A. The one thing I had going for me on this one was the brightly-colored entrance gate seen on the show. At least there was no chance of confusing it with other local schools... But I still didn't make much progress at first.

But then, after I learned that they were filming near the studio, I stopped looking in Long Beach & San Pedro and shifted my search to Hollywood, looking for schools near Sunset & Gower.  And there it was, just a few blocks from the studio. Google StreetView let me verify it easily enough, then I drove past in person on a Sunday morning to shoot the photo.
