Dexter Filming Locations: The Fruit Vendor Intersection

DEXTER Filming Locations - hundreds of actual places where the TV show Dexter was filmed.

The location: The Fruit Vendor Intersection

Q. What is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. A public intersection

Q. Where is it supposed to be on the show?

    A. Either at or near Muralia Road, in Miami.

Q. When did we see it on the show?

    A. In Episode 12, of Season 5, "The Big One".

The fruit vendor is encountered in two separate scenes, first by Jordan Chase and later by Debra.

In the first scene, Chase has kidnapped Lumen, and has her tied up in the trunk of his car.

But as luck would have it, when Chase stops at a red light, he's spotted by an Hispanic man selling fruit at the side of the road.

The man approaches the car and recognizes the driver as Jordan Chase.  Chase ignores him.

But just then, Lumen starts making noise inside the trunk, and the fruit vendor hears her. Chase, starting to panic, roars off in his car as soon as the light changes. (He gets out later and knocks Lumen unconscious.)

The fruit vendor, though, notifies the police.

In the second scene, we see Debra stopping at the same intersection to interview the fruit vendor - or try to.

Debra doesn't speak Spanish, and the man doesn't speak much English. But he manages to tell her that he saw Chase and that he heard sounds coming from the trunk.

He then tells her that Chase seemed to be heading in the direction of a nearby summer camp, which is indeed where Chase has taken Lumen.

Q. What is it actually in real life?

    A. A public street - but nowhere near Miami.

Q. Where can I find it in real life?

    A. This short scene was shot at the intersection of Loynes Drive & Bixby Village Drive, in Long Beach, CA.

To be more precise, Chase is heading west on Loynes Drive, when he stops at the intersection.

The fruit vendor is at the northeast corner of Loynes and Bixby Village Drives.

That's about a quarter of a mile east of Pacific Coast Highway.

On the north side of that intersection is the Bixby Village golf course, and on the south side is a mobile home park. The mobile homes can be glimpsed in the background of this scene.

They shot quite a few scenes while they were on Loynes Drive, all for that same final Episode 12.

Besides these scenes of the fruit vendor, they also shot the scenes of Dexter stealing a car, of Chase driving while talking to Dexter on the phone, and of Chase stopping his car to silence Lumen.

I shot the photo below in December 2010:

In the photo above, my camera is looking west on Loynes Drive, just east of Bixby Village Drive.
(The fruit vendor was on that green lawn to the right, at the northeast corner.)

Q. How the heck did you figure out where it was?

    A.  In previous seasons, I've usually had to hunt down the locations after viewing the episodes, using clues from the various scenes.  By the 5th season, though, I'd developed a small group of fans, spies & tipsters who kept an eye out for Dexter filming in their neighborhoods, and would let me know in advance when something was about to film there.

Between those reports, and my own personal reconnaissance around town, by the time the first episode aired, I already knew most (but not all) of the filming locations, and only needed to watch the episodes and match up the scenes with the correct locations.

This group of helpful fans includes Kerry, Rick, Joel, Geoff, Ellen, Julie, Susan, Jeff, and others. My thanks to all of them.

I had heard from Rick that they were filming on Loynes. After the scene aired, I heard from Ellen Coleen, who both ID'ed the spot as Loynes Drive.  (Thanks, Rick Ellen & Coleen!)

Google StreetView made it easy to pinpoint the exact spot, and the directions he was driving. Plus, you can see the words "Bixby Village" on a street sign in one shot. Then I went there in person and shot the photo you see above, as well as photos for the other scenes filmed on Loynes.
